UF to Upgrade Armstrong with NFL-Quality Turf

As part of an ongoing initiative to enhance the athletic facilities available to students, The University of Findlay will begin the installation of a new synthetic turf system at the Peg and Russ Armstrong Sports Complex this week.

The turf, which was originally used at the Superdome in New Orleans, is being installed by Maumee Bay Turf Center and will be used for both practices and future competitions by UF athletic teams.

“Our student-athletes at Findlay are outstanding both in the classroom and on the field,” states Brandi Laurita, UF athletic director. “The installation of turf at our Armstrong Sports Complex will enhance their experience on the field and advance their level play.”

The new turf at the Armstrong Complex is the third significant upgrade the University has made to its athletic facilities this year. Over the summer, Croy Gymnasium underwent renovations to improve safety and the fan experience including new bleachers and upgrades to the graphics. In addition, the indoor track at the Koehler Fitness and Recreation Complex was replaced in August with a more modern, faster surface.

“The condition of all our campus facilities, including the athletic facilities, is integral to the student experience at UF,” said Laurita. “We are very excited about all the recent upgrades and we know that our students and fans will benefit from them for years to come.”

Details about the turf:

  • UBU Sports Speed S5-M synthetic turf system
  • Playing surface of the turf is 112,720 sq. ft. and contains billions of UBU Sports’ exclusive Harmony slit-film fibers and infill mixture of 70% rubber / 30% silica sand.
  • This system is used by the Cincinnati Bengals, Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, New York Jets, NFL Pro Bowl and Kentucky Wildcats among many others.
  • It has been the choice for 12 of the last 14 NFL installations.

Maumee Bay Turf Center is located in Oregon, Ohio. Run by CEO and 1991 UF alumnus Brad Morrison, their athletic fields division includes synthetic and natural athletic field consultation, design, construction, maintenance and renovation. Their outdoor services division provides creative landscape design and installation as well as residential and commercial facility maintenance.

Maumee Bay Turf Center and UBU Sports, the manufacturer of synthetic turf at their facility in Dalton, Ga., have successfully completed 28 NFL stadium installations and over 100 NCAA stadium installations during their partnership. Super Bowl XLVII and the Allstate Sugar Bowl were played on their turf system among many other prestigious events.
