Goebel, Tong Named Male and Female Athletes of the Year

Nick Goebel and Hannah Tong have been selected as the 2016-17 Male and Female Athletes of the Year at the University of Findlay.

Goebel, a standout wrestler at Findlay, captured the James D. Houdeshell Male Athlete of the Year honor. During his final season as a member of the Roughneck wrestling team, Goebel compiled an overall record of 27-1 and finished third at nationals in the 149-pound weight class. He was the top-ranked wrestler in the nation for the entire season en route to All-American honors. A regional champion, Goebel was also named first team all-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

Goebel finished his career with 110 victories, the seventh-best total in school history, and set a single-season record with 40 victories during the 2015-16 campaign. He was named All-American three times and also won three regional titles.

Tong, an All-American volleyball player, was selected as the Sharon G. Milligan Female Athlete of the Year. During her final year with the Oilers, Tong became the first Findlay volleyball player to capture first team All-American accolades from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). She was also voted first team all-region, first team all-conference, and was selected as the Midwest Region Player of the Year and the GLIAC Attacker of the Year.

Outside of her achievements on the court, Tong was a Capital one Academic All-District 4 selection and earned the GLIAC Fall Commissioner's Award for her work in the classroom.

During her tenure with the Oilers, Tong was named All-American three times and currently ranks fifth all-time at Findlay with 1,563 career kills.
