Oilers Drop Double-Header at Ashland
The University of Findlay baseball team traveled to Ashland, OH to take on the Eagles of Ashland University for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) double-header on Wednesday, April 23rd and lost both contests. Game 1 ended with a final of 5-0 and Game 2 finished with a 5-4 tally. The losses dropped the Oilers to 11-24 and 8-17 in the GLIAC.
GAME 1 Box Score
Findlay struggled at the plate as they were shut out 5-0. Ashland jumped on top early as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first. They added two more runs in the fourth and a single run in the sixth.
The Oilers best chance to score came in the sixth when Peter Yorgen, who had three hits, singled to start the inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch, putting a runner on third with no outs. He was eventually thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice to third base.
Yorgen led the offense with his 3-for-3 performance at the dish.
Drew Hargrove took the loss on the mound as he pitched 5.2 innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits. He walked three and struck out one.
GAME 2 Box Score
The nightcap began differently as Findlay jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
With one out, Yorgen walked and advanced to third on a Reid Rothenbuhler double to right center. After a pop up, Joe Sickler drove in the pair with a double to right and eventually scored on an error by the third baseman. A pair of Eagles pitchers combined for three straight walks, scoring Nick Antonides for the final run of the inning. Unfortunately, it was also the final run of the game for Findlay as Ashland scored one in the second, two in the third, one in the fifth, and one in the seventh for a walk-off win.
Sickler and Logan Harrah each had two hits including a double in the game.
Alex Williams was the tough luck loser out of the bullpen as he pitched 2.2 innings and allowed just a single run on two hits. He walked one and struck out four.
The Oilers will be back on the field Saturday and Sunday, April 26th and 27th as they travel to Allendale, MI for a GLIAC series with Grand Valley State, who enters the contests ranked 19th in the country by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The first game on Saturday will begin at 1:00pm.
