Oilers Wrap Up Florida Trip

Auburndale, FLA – The University of Findlay baseball team dropped another double header on Friday, March 6 to close out their Florida trip. The Oilers lost the pair of games to Evangel University, an NAIA school out of Springfield, Missouri, which makes Findlay's record 2-8 on the season.

In the first game of the twin bill, Findlay looked to end their scoring woes, taking an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first but eventually losing the contest 3-2.

The first inning began with singles from Harrah and Peter Yorgen and after a lineout, Pete Burkett singled to center, scoring Harrah and moving Yorgen to third. Austin Adams then roped a ball into deep right field, deep enough to earn the sacrifice fly, scoring Yorgen and giving the Oilers their first lead in two days, 2-0 over Evangel.

However, those three hits in the first inning would be all the hits for Findlay as Crusaders starting pitcher Reese Taylor retired the next 16 of 18 Oilers hitters and the two that reached were on errors.

Findlay received another solid outing on the mound from Colin Gossard who tossed 5.1 innings and scattered nine hits allowing three runs and striking out four.

As a team the Oilers scored two runs on three hits and made two errors.

The night cap featured another pitchers dual and the low scoring affair saw the Oilers come up on the short end of a 3-1 final.

The lone run for Findlay came in the second inning when Jon Shollenberger drew a two-out walk and later scored on a single from Troy Merriman.

Findlay's offense was unable to muster anymore runs as hitting with runners on base was again an issue. The Oilers left a runner on base in each of the first five innings.

Taking the loss on the mound was Austin Rodesky who threw 97 pitches in his four innings pitched. He allowed two runs, just one earned, on five hits and struck out seven.

The Oilers will be back in action next Friday, March 13, for games down in Cary, North Carolina vs. Dominican University and Dowling University on Friday.
