Oilers Split GLIAC Doubleheader with SVSU
University Center, MI – The University of Findlay baseball team traveled on Friday, April 3 to take on Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe, the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State University and split a doubleheader. The split moved the Oilers record to 7-19 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
Findlay struck early in the first contest as Josh Schwerer and Chase Goulette each collected singles, scoring a run and putting the visitors ahead 1-0 in the first. But from that point on, the offense went silent as Goulette's hit in the first was the last of the game for Findlay.
SVSU tied the game at 1-1 after the first and took a 3-1 lead after the second. An add-on run in the sixth made the score 4-1, the final score.
Collin Parrill took the loss as he pitched six innings and allowed four runs on six hits. He struck out two and walked three.
Just like in the first game, Findlay jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Peter Yorgen singled with one out and ultimately scored on a bases loaded walk to Pete Burkett.
SVSU took a 2-1 lead after three innings but Findlay answered with two in the fourth and two in the fifth. Those runs gave the Oilers a 5-2 lead.
The Cardinals scored three runs in the eighth inning on a three-run homerun and tied the game at 5-5, but the Oilers answered again with three in the top of the ninth putting them ahead 8-5.
Alex Williams came in for the save and, despite giving up a run, got the job done and sealed the 8-6 victory in a back and forth contest.
Austin Adams led the Oilers on offense as he collected a pair of hits, scored two runs, and had an RBI. Pete Burkett and Yorgen each had two hits, a run scored, and an RBI while Kevin Schrock had one hit and two RBI.
For the game, Findlay scored eight runs on nine hits.
Jon Walker earned his first win of the season as he pitched eight innings and allowed five runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked one.
Williams pitched one complete inning and allowed one run on no hits. He struck out one and walked one and earned his fourth save of the year.
The Oilers are back at it tomorrow, Saturday, April 4 for another doubleheader set to begin at noon.
