Oilers Drop GLIAC Opener

Findlay, OH – The University of Findlay baseball team dropped their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opener on Friday, March 25. Both games were played in Findlay but, because the series was originally to be played at Northwood, the Timberwolves were officially the home team on the board. The two losses drop Findlay's record to 7-8 overall and an 0-2 start in GLIAC play.

For the second year in a row, Timberwolves' pitcher Alex Lewandowski handled the Oilers lineup and allowed just a pair of runs to earn his fourth win of the year.

Findlay got on the board in the top of the third inning when sophomore Cameron Johnson, who reached on an error to begin the inning, scored on a groundout from freshman Derrick Herd. This run gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead and was the only time the Orange and Black would have a lead in the double header.

Northwood responded and scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning off Findlay starter, junior Austin Rodesky.

A single run in the fourth inning gave the Oilers some life as they trailed just 3-2, but solo runs in the fourth and fifth, and a four-run sixth, put the game away as Northwood would pick up the game one victory.

Findlay finished the game with two runs on six hits and made one error on defense.

Rodesky took his first loss of the season on the mound after starting the year 4-0 and leading the conference in strikeouts, wins, and ERA. Against the Timberwolves he lasted 4.2 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. He struck out six and walked three.

Johnson led the offense with a hit, RBI, and a run scored while junior Austin Adams had a hit and a run scored.

The fifth inning was disaster for the Oilers in game two as Northwood was able to plate seven runs to put the game away.

After scoring single runs in the first and fourth innings, the Timberwolves sent 11 batters to the dish and picked up four hits en route to a seven run inning that gave the home team a 9-0 lead. Two more runs in the seventh would give Northwood the final tally of 11 runs.

Findlay's lone runs came in the top of the ninth inning when senior Kris Hayward started the inning off with a single up the middle. Junior Kevin Shrock would later reach on a fielders' choice and with two outs, sophomore Anthony Ondrejcak smashed a double over the right fielder's head to send Hayward and Schrock home. Two batters later, a pop up to the short stop ended the three-hour game that was played in 38 degree weather.

The Oilers finished the game with two runs on seven hits. They made no errors.

Senior Mason Mayberry was tagged with the loss as he pitched four innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. He struck out three and walked two.

Junior Peter Yorgen led the offense and was the only player with a multi-hit performance in the double header. He finished 2-for-5 in the game.

Ondrejcak had the big double and two RBI while Hayward finished 1-for-1 with a run scored.

The Oilers and Timberwolves will conclude their series tomorrow with Findlay being the home team in a double-header set to begin at 1:00 PM at the Cube.
