Oilers Earn Split with Chargers

The University of Findlay baseball team split a doubleheader against Hillsdale College on April 13 in Hillsdale, Mich. The Oilers won the first game by a score of 17-3 and then fell 9-3 in the nightcap. The split gives the Oilers a 10-15 record on the season with a 3-7 mark in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) competition.

Game 1 (W 17-3) Box Score

The Oilers came out swinging in game one as they lit up the scoreboard for a season-high 17 runs on 13 hits. The 17 runs scored by the Oilers were the most since they claimed a 24-12 win over Oakland City on March 5, 2013 in Clearwater, Fla.

Sophomore Christion Smith and fellow sophomore Josh Schwerer did most of the damage at the plate in game one as they combined to go 4-for-9 with nine runs batted in and four runs scored. Smith went 2-for-4 with five RBI's while Schwerer went 2-for-5 with four RBI's.

Smith set the tone early in the game with a two-run homer to left in the top of the first inning. He then added a two-run single in the second as the Oilers put up eight runs in the first two frames. Schwerer joined in on the fun in the fifth, blasting a grand slam to left.

Freshman Brian Cappiello went 2-for-3 with four runs scored while junior Peter Yorgen, sophomore Pete Burkett and sophomore Cameron Johnson each tallied a pair of hits in the victory. Burkett drove in two runs while Johnson crossed the plate three times in the game.

Freshman Mark Delas picked up the win on the bump after allowing three runs in 6.2 innings of work. He also added five strikeouts and walked only one batter.

Game 2 (L 9-3) Box Score

The second game was a much different story than the first as the Oilers struggled to push runs across the plate. Findlay held a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning, but the Chargers scored two runs in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to go up by a score of 5-3. Then in the eighth frame, Hillsdale put the game out of reach with four runs to extend their lead to 9-3.

The Oilers once again reached double digits in the hit department as they accumulated 11 in the game. They were unable to cash in on those hits like they did in the first half as they only crossed the plate three times.

Junior Logan Harrah paced the squad by going 3-for-4 while Cappiello finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Smith also continued to hit well in the second game and finished the nightcap by going 2-for-4 with a RBI.

Freshman Derrick Herd also recorded two hits in the game, going 2-for-5, while Yorgen and Burkett had one apiece.

Sophomore Alexander Theiss took the loss on the mound for Findlay after allowing three runs in 5.2 innings of action.

Next Up

The Oilers will be back at home on April 16-17 to host Tiffin University in a four-game set at Fifth Third Field. The doubleheader on Saturday will start at 1pm and the twin bill on Sunday is slated to begin at 1 pm as well.
