Findlay Splits Another GLIAC Double-Header

Painesville, OH – The University of Findlay baseball team, off to one of their best starts in school history, headed to Lake Erie College for their second Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) series of the year. The March 25 double-header ended in a split for the Orange and Black and gives the Oilers a 12-4 record overall with a 3-3 mark in GLIAC play on the year while the Storm fall to 6-12 and 1-5 in league play.

Findlay has allowed their opponent to score first in seven of the first 14 games but has amassed five wins in those seven. That would not be the case in the first contest as the Storm would put three runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning to take the first lead of the series.

The Oilers' bats came to life in the third inning. Senior Logan Harrah picked up the first hit of the day for Findlay, an infield single. Sophomore Derrick Herd and senior Peter Yorgen followed with back-to-back doubles to cut the Lake Erie lead to 3-2.

Findlay would not get another hit until the seventh inning. Down 4-2, junior Pete Burkett led off with a single and was followed by a single from junior Cameron Johnson. A sacrifice bunt would put the tying run on second base with just one out, but a pair of strikeouts would end the game.

Senior Austin Rodesky took the loss on the mound and falls to 2-2 on the year. He tossed six innings and allowed four runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out four.

Herd and Yorgen each had a double and an RBI to lead the offense.

Findlay finished the game with two runs on six hits, made no errors, and left five runners on base while the Storm scored four runs on six hits, made no errors, and left just two runners on base.

The Storm again got on the board first in the second game with a pair of runs on a home run in their first at-bat in the bottom of the first inning.

Findlay found their answer in the third inning, an inning that began with a hit-by-pitch to senior Miguel Valdez. After a fielder's choice, Herd and Yorgen hit back-to-back doubles for the second time of the day to tie the game at 2-2. A strikeout and a runner caught stealing would end the inning.

The Oilers scored a single run in the fifth on another double from Yorgen, is third double of the day, and doubled up the Storm with another single run in the ninth off a double from Burkett.

AJ Cecil would come in the ninth and worked around a single and an error to pick up his third save of the season.

Burkett led the offense in the second game as he went 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI while Herd and Yorgen finished with two hits apiece. Herd scored two runs while Yorgen, who extended his hitting streak to 18 games, drove in a team-high two runs.

Junior Colin Gossard picked up his first win of the year as he pitched five innings and allowed just two runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out seven.

Findlay finished with four runs on ten hits, made two errors and left nine runners on base. The Storm had two runs on eight hits, made one error and left 11 runners on base.

The two teams will wrap up the series with a double-header on Monday, March 27 in Painesville.
