Oilers Drop Double-Header at Wayne State
Detroit, MI – The University of Findlay baseball team dropped a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) games on Saturday, April 1 at Wayne State. With the two losses, the Oilers fall to 14-7 overall and 5-5 in conference play while the Warriors improve to 14-7 overall and sport a 4-0 mark in league action.
Game 1 | L: 2-1 (Box Score)
The Warriors got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a home run but the Oilers came back with a run of their own in the third when senior Peter Yorgen roped a two-out single to left to score senior Logan Harrah, who reached base with a one-out double.
Wayne State then scored what would be the winning run in the bottom of the fifth with help from a wild pitch.
Findlay, which left at least one runner on base in every inning, had their chance to take the lead in the fifth inning when, with the score tied at 1-1, they loaded the bases with just one out. That threat would be thwarted by a ground ball double play to end the inning.
Findlay got a quality start from junior Colin Gossard, who now has a 2-1 record on the year after the complete game loss. He threw six innings and allowed two runs on six hits while walking just two and striking out ten.
Logan Harrah, sophomore Derrick Herd, and freshman Austin Rawlins each had two hits for the Oilers, who finished with one run on seven hits. The team made one error and left eight on runners on base. Yorgen's two hits were the only two of the day, ending his streak at 22 consecutive games with a base hit.
The Warriors scored their two runs on six hits, made no errors and left six runners on base.
Game 2 | L: 3-2 (Box Score)
The second contest started the same way the first began, an early home run off the bat of Devin Rose in the first inning to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
Findlay took their first lead in the fourth inning when junior Pete Burkett led off with a single and was followed by a double from junior Cameron Johnson. A groundout scored Burkett to tie the game and the Oilers took the lead on a single from junior Josh Schwerer.
It would not be enough as the Green and Gold would tie the game in the fifth and take the lead on a home run in the eighth to seal the win.
Schwerer finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI while Johnson and Burkett each had a hit and a run scored. Junior Troy Merriman had an RBI.
Senior Austin Rodesky got the start and threw 6.2 innings, allowing just two runs, one earned, on six hits. He struck out eight and walked two and gave way to freshman Drew Kline, who took the loss. Kline threw 1.1 innings and allowed one hit, the eighth inning home run. He struck out one.
Findlay finished with two runs on six hits. They made one error and left eight on base.
Wayne State scored three runs on seven hits, made two errors and left seven runners on base.
The two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow in Findlay with a double-header that is set to begin at 1:00 pm at The Cube.
