Oilers Defeat Blue Knights

Urbana, OH - The University of Findlay baseball team traveled to Blue Knight Field on the campus of Urbana University on Wednesday, April 5. The Oilers defeated the Blue Knights 10-3 to improve to 17-7 on the season.

Urbana took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI double by Nick Gallagher. Findlay held the Blue Knights scoreless the remaining of the game until the final inning. The Oilers struggled at the plate early, but erupted for five runs on three hits in the top of the seventh inning.

Senior Peter Yorgen drew a walk to begin the inning and an error allowed junior Pete Burkett to reach first base. A wild pitch moved the runners and sophomore Jordan Williams delivered with a two RBI double. After a sacrifice bunt, junior Troy Merriman walked to have runners on the corners. Back-to-back RBI singles by junior Josh Schwerer and senior Logan Herrah put the Oilers ahead 4-1. The last run of the inning would be on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Derrick Herd for a 5-1 lead.

Findlay would put together another five run inning in the top of the ninth on five hits and three errors by the Blue Knights. Schwerer and Harrah singled to begin the inning and a Cameron Johnson walk loaded the bases. Yorgen brought one run across the plate on a single and two more followed on a single by Burkett. The final run of the game for the Oilers came on a RBI single by Merriman.

Urbana would score two runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 10-3 final score.

The Oilers finished the game with 13 hits, led by Harrah (2-for-5), Johnson (2-for-3), Burkett (3-for-5) and Schwerer (2-for-5).

On the mound junior Alexander Theiss (2-0) picked up the victory after coming in relief to pitch three innings giving up no runs with no hits and three strikeouts. Sophomore Alex Harter started for Findlay and pitched five innings giving up one run on five hits with two strikeouts.

The Oilers return to the playing field on Saturday, April 8 at Hillsdale College for the first two games of a four game series. The first game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
