Oilers Drop Two at Hillsdale

Hillsdale, MI – The University of Findlay baseball team dropped a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) to the Chargers of Hillsdale College on April 8. With the losses, the Oilers fall to 17-9 overall and 7-7 in league play.

Game 1 | L 10-2 (Box Score)

The Oilers took an early lead to begin the weekend as they picked up a single run in the first inning. With two outs, sophomore Derrick Herd singled and advanced on a single from senior Peter Yorgen. Junior Pete Burkett then reached on an error that allowed Herd to score.

Findlay went up 2-0 in the fourth when a single from freshman Austin Rawlins plated Yorgen, who led off the inning with a double to left field.

The big hit of the game came in the bottom of the fourth when the Chargers blasted a grand slam to take a 4-2 lead. Hillsdale used that momentum to plate three runs in each of the next two innings to take a 10-2 lead, the eventual final score.

Yorgen led the offense with a perfect day at the plate (3-for-3) and scored a run while Rawlins had two hits (2-for-3) and an RBI.

Junior Colin Gossard took the loss on the hill, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing four earned runs on four hits. He walked four and struck out eight.

Game 2 | L 9-2 (Box Score)

Hillsdale came out swinging in the second game and put up four runs in the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead.

The Oilers answered with two runs in the top of the third. With one out, junior Josh Schwerer doubled to right and scored on a double from senior Logan Harrah, who eventually scored on a single by Yorgen. The inning ended with the score at 4-2.

However, the Chargers plated two runs in the bottom of the third and the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 8-2. Another single run in the seventh sealed the win for the home team.

Harrah was the lone Oilers batter to collect more than one hit and finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Senior Austin Rodesky took the loss on the hill and falls to 2-3 on the year. He threw 4.2 innings and allowed eight runs, six earned, on five hits. He walked six and struck out five.

The series will conclude with a double-header in Hillsdale starting tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
