Bats Go Cold Against Walsh

Findlay, OH – The University of Findlay baseball team was blanked in their double header on Friday, April 14 against Walsh University. The two losses give the Oilers a record of 17-14 with a 7-11 mark in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) while the Cavaliers improve to 23-9 overall and 12-4 in conference action.

Walsh, one of the better offense teams in the league, stepped off the bus ready to hit and was able to plate a single run in the first inning. In the second, the Cavs had one out and runners on first and second and rolled a ball to second base. Findlay got the out at second, but the throw to first, which would have ended the inning, was wide of the bag and allowed two runs to score, giving Walsh a 3-0 lead.

The Oilers' only hit of the game would come with two outs in the fourth inning, a single to right off the bat of sophomore Derrick Herd. It was one of just four baserunners for Findlay in the game, one of which reached second base.

Senior Austin Rodesky took the loss on the hill, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. He walked six, hit a batter, and struck out five.

Findlay had an opportunity to score early in the game when, with one out, Derrick Herd singled and was followed by junior Pete Burkett who reach on an error. After a strikeout, junior Troy Merriman lined a ball off the pitcher who, in self-defense, knocked the ball down and recorded the out.

Both pitchers went pitch-for-pitch with each other, neither allowing a run through seven innings. With two outs in the top of the eighth, Walsh's Andrew Stalnaker got ahold of an off-speed pitch from sophomore Mark Delas and hit it over the wall in left for the only run of the game.

One mistake aside, Delas dominated the Cavaliers lineup as he tossed the complete game and allowed just one run on six hits. He walked one and struck out nine in the tough luck loss.

Herd finished the game 2-for-4 and ended the day with three hits in the double header. He was the only player to record multiple hits on the day.

These teams are set to square off again tomorrow in Canton, Ohio for a double header that will begin at 1:00 pm.
