Findlay Splits on Day 1 in Cary, NC

Cary, N.C. – The University of Findlay baseball team split on Friday, March 8 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. The Oilers fell to Clarion University in the first contest of the day but rallied against Jefferson University to earn a win in the nightcap.

Game 1 vs Clarion (L 5-1 | Box Score)

Findlay scored a single run in the top of the first inning after Ethan St. Clair singled to start the game and came around to score on a hit by Tyler Burley. But that was the only run of the game for the Orange and Black.

Clarion scored two runs in the second, a run in the fifth, and two more in the eighth to secure the 5-1 win.

Findlay ended with one run on six hits and made two errors while Clarion had five runs on seven hits and made one error.

Burley and Casey Gould each had two hits for the Oilers while Derrick Herd had one hit, a double, that was the only extra-base hit of the game for Findlay.

Freshman Ryan Mohr took the loss on the hill in his first career start as he tossed 6.1 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits. He walked two and struck out eight.

Game 2 vs Jefferson (W 9-5 | Box Score)

Like they did in game one, Findlay scored in the first inning of the nightcap. The Oilers struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first when Tyler Burley drove in both Ethan St. Clair and Derrick Herd to put the home team up 2-0.

The Rams of Jefferson University scored four runs in the top of the second to take a 4-2 lead, but Findlay struck for single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to regain the lead at 5-4.

After Jefferson left the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Findlay plated two runs in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead. Burley picked up one of the RBI in the inning on a groundout while Nic Varda singled in the other run.

An RBI single by Ryan Johnson in the seventh and an RBI double by Tyler Archambeau in the eighth put Findlay comfortably ahead as they sealed their fourth win of the season.

Derrick Herd, Tyler Burley, and Trevor Anderson each had two hits for Findlay. St. Clair, Herd, and freshman AJ Clarey each scored a pair of runs in the game.

Freshman Anthony Kyle got his first start on the hill and threw five innings and allowed just one earned run. He walked five and struck out five. Kyle turned the ball over to Jameson Jacobs who threw the final four innings to earn his first career save. Jacobs tossed four innings and gave up just one run on three hits.

The Oilers will wrap up their spring trip on Saturday, March 9 with games against Fairmont State and Mansfield.
