Oilers Drop G-MAC Opening Double-Header

Defiance, Ohio – The University of Findlay baseball team began conference play on Sunday, March 17 against Hillsdale College. The games were moved to be played at Defiance High School due to weather related field conditions at Hillsdale. Findlay dropped both games of the double header and fall below the .500 mark to 5-6 overall and begin the year 0-2 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). Hillsdale is now 5-9 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Game 1 (L 5-4 | Box Score)

The last time the Oilers took the field, they played in an 18-inning contest with Mansfield University, a game Findlay won 7-6. In Sunday's opener the Oilers again needed extra innings to decide a winner, although this time the Orange and Black came out on the losing end.

Findlay scored in the first inning when Ethan St. Clair, who led off the game getting hit by pitch, would come around to score on a single by Nic Varda. Two innings later Tyler Burley scored on a single by Trevor Anderson to give Findlay a 2-0 lead.

Hillsdale scored one in the fourth on a solo home run and Findlay answered with a sac fly from Alex Foulks in the sixth to keep the two-run gap.

That gap did not last as the home team scored a single run in the sixth and two more in the eighth to make the score 4-4.

That score would remain until the 12th inning when Hillsdale led off with a double that later scored on a throwing error by the Oilers, ending the contest.

In the game, Findlay scored four runs on six hits and left 11 runners on base.

Tyler Burley and Trevor Anderson each had two hits including a double. Anderson was the lone player who crossed the dish twice and also added an RBI.

Mark Delas got the start on the hill and threw seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out nine batters.

Trey Bame took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year. He threw four innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits. He walked four and struck out two.

Game 2 (L 4-2 | Box Score)

In the second contest, it was Hillsdale that took a lead, scoring one run in the second inning.

Findlay came to bat in the top of the fourth and a Trevor Anderson single was followed by a tripled by Casey Gould to tie the game at 1-1. After a fly-out, Ryan Johnson singled to give the Oilers the lead.

That was all the offense that Findlay would muster as the Chargers plated one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to secure a 4-2 victory.

In the seven inning game, Findlay had two runs on eight hits, did not make an error, and left seven runners on base.

Derrick Herd and Jordan Williams each had two hits while Casey Gould had one hit, one run scored, and one RBI.

Alex Harter took the loss on the hill and falls to 1-2 on the year. He threw 5.2 innings and gave up four runs on six hits. He walked four and struck out five.

Findlay will wrap up the series with Hillsdale tomorrow, March 18 at Adrian College.
