Western Team Takes 3rd at Nationals

The University of Findlay western equestrian team placed third at the 2013 Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Championship, which took place from May 2-5 in Harrisburg, Pa.

The Oilers scored 17 points at the event as West Texas A&M was crowned champions with 26 points.

In team competition, Rebekah Irish came away with a championship victory in the opening reining while Alexandria Gokey took top honors in the intermediate western horsemanship.

Ashley Winters added a fifth place finish in the open western horsemanship, Emily Schaefer was sixth in the beginner western horsemanship, Makena Lawrence placed seventh in the advanced western horsemanship and Erika Druker was ninth in the novice western horsemanship.

Individually, Winters placed second overall in the AQHA high point western rider competition.

Melissa McDonald added an individual national championship in the advanced western horsemanship with Jared Deatrick taking reserve honors in the same event.

Irish added a reserve champion honor in the opening reining, Erica Druker and Zachary Brown were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the intermediate western horsemanship and Katherine Davis took eighth in the novice western horsemanship.
