Hoying Breaks Record In Oilers Win Over Dragons

The University of Findlay football team captured their first victory of the season on Saturday, September 18 as they defeated Tiffin University by a score of 10-7 at Frost Kalnow Stadium in Tiffin, Ohio. The win gives the Oilers a 1-2 record on the season with a 1-1 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

After a scoreless first quarter, senior kicker Cameron Stevens booted a 32-yard field goal with 7:32 remaining in the half to give the Oilers a 3-0 lead.

Leading 3-0, sophomore running back Monterae Williams found the end zone at the 8:27 mark of the third quarter from one yard away to make the score 10-0 before the Dragons tacked on a score during the fourth quarter.

Williams led the offense with a career-high 39 carries for 171 yards and also caught two passes for 17 yards as well.

Freshman quarterback Zach Tate completed 10-of-20 passes for 120 yards while senior tight end Steve Winner made two receptions for 34 yards in the win.

Defensively, the Oilers received an outstanding game from junior defensive lineman Craig Hoying, who set a school record with four sacks in the game.

Hoying, who made seven total tackles and 5.5 stops for a loss in the win, eclipsed the mark of 3.5 sacks set by Mike Roach against the Dragons in 2008.

Freshman linebacker Kenny Klatt had a team-high nine tackles while junior defensive lineman Mark Johnson tallied seven stops, one interception and one sack.

The Oilers defense held the Dragons to –24 yards rushing in the game, the first time an opponent has failed to have positive rushing yards since Findlay limited Ashland to –11 yards during the 2006 season.

The Oilers will be back in action again next Saturday when they host #1 ranked Grand Valley State University at noon in Donnell Stadium.
