Greyhounds Knock Off Oilers 20-3

The University of Findlay football team fell 20-3 to the University of Indianapolis on Saturday, October 2 at Donnell Stadium. The Homecoming loss gives the Oilers a 1-4 record on the season with a 1-3 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

Turnovers, an inconsistent offense and missed opportunities doomed the Oilers shot of winning as the ball simply was not bouncing Findlay's way during the game.

The Oilers, who were down 10-3 early in the third quarter, dropped an interception and forced a punt by the Greyhounds, but two plays later, freshman quarterback Zach Tate tossed a pick that led to strange series of events resulting in three points for Indianapolis.

The Greyhounds drove the ball down the field and after a goal line stand by the Oilers, junior defensive lineman Brandon Cornell blocked a field goal attempt. Junior defensive back Donte Johnson recovered the blocked kick and proceeded to race down the field but fumbled the ball, giving Indianapolis a fresh set of downs at the Oilers three yard line.

Findlay's defense held strong again and forced the field goal making the score 13-3 in favor of the Greyhounds with 4:12 to play in the third period.

The Oilers then closed the third quarter down ten points and got a 24-yard punt return by senior wide receiver Dustin Zielaskiewicz to give Findlay the ball at the 50 yard line with a full period of play remaining.

Tate then fumbled the ball on the first play of the drive, which ultimately led to a touchdown for the Greyhounds as they covered 53 yards in three plays with 14:39 to play in the game.

Down 20-3, the Oilers offense sputtered and the Greyhounds came away with the win.

Findlay turned the ball over four times in the game and managed only 85 yards of total offense. The Greyhounds meanwhile racked up 299 yards of total offense and escaped the game with no turnovers.

Sophomore running back Monterae Williams led the team with 44 yards on 13 carries while Zielaskiewicz caught three passes for 24 yards.

Defensively, freshman linebacker Kenny Klatt registered 14 tackles while junior defensive lineman Craig Hoying had 13 stops to go along with 2.5 tackles for a loss.

Red-shirt freshman defensive lineman John Hammersmith contributed five tackles, three tackles for a loss and one sack in his first career start as well.

The Oilers will be back in action again on October 9 when they travel to Big Rapids, Michigan to face Ferris State University at 2:00 p.m.
