Oilers Head to Tiffin for 1st Road Game

The University of Findlay football team will be on the road for the first time this season on Saturday as they travel to Tiffin, Ohio to take on Tiffin University. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. in Frost-Kalnow Stadium.

The Series

The Oilers currently hold a commanding 20-1 advantage in the all-time series dating back to the 1986 campaign when Findlay defeated Tiffin by a score of 35-3.

The Oilers scored a 35-14 win over the Dragons last year in Tiffin. Findlay racked up 533 yards of total offense in the win and averaged 7.6 yards per play.  The Oilers threw for 347 yards and also added 186 rushing yards in the game.

Verlon Reed completed 21-of-30 passing attempts for 347 yards and four touchdowns while Daiquone Ford rushed 25 times for 151 yards and a score.  Lloyd Henry racked up ten catches for 119 yards and a score while Hampton had two receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

Feraris Golden led the defense with 11 tackles while Kenny Klatt made ten stops.

Head Coach Rob Keys

Head coach Rob Keys is currently in his fourth season at the helm of the Oilers football program. During his tenure with the team, Keys has guided the Oilers to a 23-11 overall record. He has also posted a 20-10 record in conference play.

The Oilers

The Oilers claimed a 37-28 win over McKendree last week behind three touchdown catches from senior wide receiver Lloyd Henry.

Henry caught seven balls for 109 yards and three touchdownsw while junior running back Daiquone Ford rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries.

Senior quarterback Verlon Reed threw for 212 yards and three scores, completing 21-of-35 passing attempts.  Reed also added 44 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Sophomore defensive back Evan Rinke paced the defense with ten tackles while senior safety Harold Jones-Quartey made nine stops.

The Dragons

The Dragons recorded their first ever road win in the GLIAC last week as they defeated Saginaw Valley State by a score of 28-17 in University Center, Mich.

Antonio Pipkin paced the offense by throwing for 229 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 60 yards on ten carries, scoring a touchdown on the ground too.

Jerry Brown rushed the ball 15 times for 75 yards and a score while Pedro Correa racked up five catches for 86 yards.

Terry Harper led the defense with 12 tackles while Shawn Scott had eight.

Reception Record Book

Senior wide receiver Lloyd Henry is working his way up the record books with 112 career receptions. His total ranks ninth all-time at Findlay.  He is currently chasing Darren Paige for eighth place as Page caught 117 balls for the Oilers from 2005-07.

Seth White (2010-13) is currently the all-time record holder in receptions with 149.

Henry has also accumulated 1,543 career receiving yards, a total that ranks eighth all-time at Findlay.  He is chasing Dustin Zielaskiewicz for seventh place in the record book as Zielaskiewicz recorded 1,624 yards with Findlay from 2007-10.

Scott McLaughlin (1991-94) is currently the all-time leader in receiving yards at Findlay with 2,403.

Third Time's a Charm

Senior wide receiver Lloyd Henry tied a school record with three touchdown receptions in the Oilers 37-28 win over McKendree on Sep. 15.  He now shares the record with four other players.  Rick Hatfield accomplished the feat against Bluffton in 1978, James Tyree did it against Wilmington in 1989, Mark Inkrott caught three touchdowns against Mercyhurst in 1998 and Jeff Rowe found the end zone three times against Indiana (Pa.) in 2002.

Finding the End Zone

Senior quarterback Verlon Reed has accounted for 62 points so far this year, the second best total in the nation.  Reed has thrown for five touchdowns and also rushed for five as well.  The signal caller also has a two-point conversion this year as well.

Sticky Hands

Senior wide receiver Lloyd Henry leads the GLIAC and ranks 16th in the nation with an average of 8.0 receptions per game.  Henry also leads the conference and ranks tenth in the nation with three touchdown catches.  The wideout is also among the national leaders in receiving yardage as he ranks second in the GLIAC and 12th in the nation with 119.0 yards per contest.

Airing it Out

Senior quarterback Verlon Reed ranks third in the GLIAC in passing yards per game, throwing for 252.5 yards per contest.  His five touchdown passes on the year is also the second best mark in the league and the 18th best total in the nation.

Racking up the Yardage

Senior quarterback Verlon Reed leads the GLIAC in total offense as he is averaging 362.5 yards per game.  His total is also the ninth best mark in all of NCAA Division II football.

Defending the Pass

Senior defensive back Zack Washington leads the GLIAC and ranks second in the nation with six pass breakups on the year.

Putting Points on the Board

The Oilers lead the GLIAC in red zone scoring as they are a perfect 10-for-10 this season.  They have converted nine of those opportunities into touchdowns, which is also the best percentage in the GLIAC.

Getting Votes

The Oilers received a total of 47votes in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) NCAA Division II poll, which was released on Sep. 15.  The vote total has them ranked 28th in the nation.

Findlay was one of seven teams from the GLIAC to receive votes in the poll this week. The seven teams from the GLIAC to receive votes in the poll was a national high for any individual conference.  Ohio Dominican received the most votes and is ranked ninth nationally while Ferris State is ranked 16th.  Michigan Tech, Ashland, Grand Valley State and Wayne State were the other teams from the GLIAC to receive votes in the poll.
