Coach to Cure MD

The University of Findlay football team will be participating in Coach to Cure MD for their football game at home against Ashland University on Saturday, Sep. 27.

The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) sponsored program seeks to raise awareness and money to fund research for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the most prolific lethal genetic disorder of childhood.

Since the AFCA launched this partnership in 2008, college football's backers have generously given roughly $1 million in cash and other donations. Those gifts have raised awareness of this great cause and helped fund critical research grants from ParentProject MD to university faculty at schools ranging from Florida to Missouri to UCLA, Ohio State and Penn, among others.

Coaches from the Oilers staff will be wearing patches on the sideline to promote this drive during their game against the Eagles, which is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in Donnell Stadium.

The Series

The Oilers trail 25-15-4 in the all-time series against the Eagles dating back to the 1924 campaign when Ashland came out on top by a score of 33-0.

Last season the Oilers came away with a last second, 35-28 win over the Eagles in Donnell Stadium.  The Oilers held a 28-13 lead in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles stormed back to tie the game at 28-28 with only 2:16 remaining in the game.  Findlay then marched the ball down the field and put themselves in a position to win the game.

After converting a fourth down play, the Oilers hurried to the line and spiked the ball with eight seconds left.  Devontae Payne then dropped back to pass and found Seth White in the corner of the end zone for the game-winning touchdown with only three ticks remaining in the game.

Daiquone Ford rushed the ball 41 times for 186 yards and two scores while Payne threw for 173 yards and two scores.

Head Coach Rob Keys

Head coach Rob Keys is currently in his fourth season at the helm of the Oilers football program. During his tenure with the team, Keys has guided the Oilers to a 24-11 overall record. He has also posted a 21-10 record in conference play.

National Ranking

The Oilers are ranked 25th in the nation this week, the first time they have been nationally ranked since the 2009 campaign when they were ranked 18th nationally on Oct. 12.

Pick 6's

The Oilers recorded two interception returns for touchdowns in their 59-22 rout of Tiffin last week. Junior defensive back Zack Washington and freshman defensive back Daouda Sylla returned picks 52 and 42 yards, respectively for scores. It was the first time two Oilers returned interceptions for touchdowns in the same game since 1995 when Nate Weirauch returned one for 100 yards and Dimitrice Boykin ran one back 75 yards against St. Xavier.

Here Comes the Boom

Senior Alex Irastorza only used his leg for one punt against Tiffin on Sep. 20, but made it count with a school record 79-yard punt.  The punt eclipsed the previous record of 73 yards, which was set by Jim Coger against Indianapolis in 2001.

Reception Record Book

Senior wide receiver Lloyd Henry is working his way up the record books with 116 career receptions. His total ranks ninth all-time at Findlay.  He is currently chasing Darren Paige for eighth place as Page caught 117 balls for the Oilers from 2005-07.

Seth White (2010-13) is currently the all-time record holder in receptions with 149.

Henry has also accumulated 1,597 career receiving yards, a total that ranks eighth all-time at Findlay.  He is chasing Dustin Zielaskiewicz for seventh place in the record book as Zielaskiewicz recorded 1,624 yards with Findlay from 2007-10.

Scott McLaughlin (1991-94) is currently the all-time leader in receiving yards at Findlay with 2,403.

Finding the End Zone

Senior quarterback Verlon Reed has accounted for 80 points so far this year, the third best total in the nation.  Reed has thrown for seven touchdowns and also rushed for six as well.  The signal caller also has a two-point conversion this year too.

Putting Points on the Board

The Oilers lead the nation and the GLIAC in redzone scoring as they are a perfect 14-for-14 this season.  They have converted 13 of those opportunities into touchdowns, which is also the best percentage in the GLIAC.

The Oilers are averaging 47.3 points per contest this season, which is the second best mark in the GLIAC and the ninth best total in the nation.  They put up a season-high 59 points in their win over Tiffin on Sep. 20, the first time an Oilers team has scored that many points since they defeated St. Xavier by a score of 70-8 during their national championship season of 1997.

Defending the Pass

Senior defensive back Zack Washington leads the GLIAC and ranks fifth in the nation with six pass breakups on the year.
