Gervais Sets Records in 48-44 Win over Dragons

Box Score

The University of Findlay football team ran their record to 3-0 on the year with a 48-44 win over Tiffin University on Sep. 19 in Donnell Stadium.

The game, which featured 1,311 yards of total offense, came down to two key stops by the Oilers defense late in the game. The first stop came when the Oilers held the Dragons on a fourth down play at the Findlay 18-yard line with 4:06 to play in the game. The offense then took over, but was forced to punt and give the ball back to Tiffin. The Dragons took possession of the ball at the 2:07 mark and quickly drove the ball down to the Findlay 13-yard line. The Oilers then got a big tackle from junior linebacker Anthony Linnear on a fourth and short play to seal the victory.

Sophomore quarterback Rhys Gervais had a monster game for Findlay, completing 29-of-44 passing attempts for a school record 507 yards and five touchdowns. Gervais' 507 yards passing eclipsed the record of 414, which was set by Verlon Reed against Walsh last season. His five touchdown passes tied the school record as he now shares it with Bo Hurley, who accomplished the feat against Taylor in 1997. Gervais also established a new school record for total offense in a single game with 524 yards. His record bettered Reed's mark of 469 against Hillsdale last season.

The Oilers also set team records for most passing first downs in a game with 23 and most passing yards in a game with 507.

Junior wide receiver Dylan Blunk was the favorite target on the night as he hauled in ten catches for 193 yards and a score. Sophomore wide receiver Jason Moore contributed five receptions for 101 yards and a score, senior wide receiver Tim Szabo had five catches for 75 yards and a touchdown, sophomore tight end Anthony Federico registered four catches for 68 yards and two scores and sophomore wide receiver Airion Kosak had four catches for 63 yards in the win.

Senior running back Daiquone Ford led the rushing attack with 23 carries for 83 yards and two scores.

Sophomore defensive back Aaron Ivory led the defense with 14 tackles while sophomore linebacker Daouda Sylla had 11 stops and a strip sack.

Antonio Pipkin led the Dragons with 344 passing yards and 234 rushing yards.

The Oilers will be back out on the road next Saturday when they face Ashland University at 7 p.m.
