Findlay Sets G-MAC Scoring Record on Homecoming
Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay football team celebrated Homecoming in a big way on Saturday, Sep. 28 in the friendly confines of Donnell Stadium. Facing the winless Alderson Broaddus Battlers, the Oilers earned a 75-28 victory to improve to 2-2 on the year and 1-1 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. The 75 points are the most score in a game for Findlay since the Oilers hung 78 points on Bluffton College on Oct. 27, 1984. It is the third-highest scoring game in Findlay history and also set a new record for most points scored in a single game in G-MAC history.
Offensively, the Oilers did just about anything they wanted, especially behind the strength of their experienced offensive line. Findlay rushed the ball 48 times out of the 67 total offensive plays. On those 48 rushing attempts, the Oilers picked up 424 yards, the 35th time in program history that Findlay has had 400+ rushing yards and the most yards on the ground since they rushed for 425 in 2013 against Lake Erie.
Leading the rushing charge in terms of yards was junior Derek Lynch who carried the ball eight times for 131 yards and one touchdown. However, he was joined in the century club by sophomore Brenan Auer and senior Nate Slagel who rushed for 108 and 103 yards, respectively. Auer found the end zone once while Slagel scored a career-high four touchdowns. Junior Lance Mitchell also got in on the action as he picked up five carries for 34 yards and two touchdowns.
In total, Findlay outgained Alderson Broaddus 620-to-246 in total yards and picked up 28 first downs to the Battlers' 25. The Oilers 620 yards are 12th all-time in school history and 10th most in G-MAC history.
Junior quarterback Matt Winzeler, who today was content handing the ball of to any number of running backs, had a solid game, completing 11-of-19 passes for 196 yards and two scores. Junior Ruben Flowers had the bulk of those yards on the receiving end, catching two passes for 50 yards and a score. Senior William Morehand, who had a receiving touchdown in the game, and freshman Tanner Schroeder each had 40+ yards receiving, as well.
While Findlay was running wild offensively, the defense was stout, allowing just 33 rushing yards on 40 carries for the Battlers.
Senior Anthony Kastelic led the way with ten tackles while Kijana Caldwell and Cade Rogers each had seven. As a team, the Oilers rung up 15 tackles-for-loss. Junior Kyle Gibson led the team with three TFL that included a sack.
Sophomore Christopher Jefferson had the lone interception of the game for Findlay while junior Colin Robertson recovered a fumble in the end zone for a defensive touchdown.
Findlay is back in action at home next Saturday, Oct. 5 when they play host to also winless, Kentucky Wesleyan. That game will kick off at 7:00 pm EST.
