Findlay Falters vs #20 Ashland in Home Opener

Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay football team welcomed the 20th-ranked Ashland Eagles to Donnell Stadium on Sep. 10. The Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) contest ended in a 28-3 loss for the Oilers. With the loss, Findlay falls to 0-2 on the year, both of which are conference losses, while Ashland improves to 2-0 and 1-0 in G-MAC play.
Findlay, which had won the last two matchups with Ashland, both in Donnell Stadium, won the toss and elected to receive. The Oilers moved the ball 22 yards before an overthrow led to an interception by Ashland's Jordan Swett who went 55 yards in the opposite direction, setting up an Eagles touchdown two plays later.
On the ensuing possession, Findlay went on it's best drive of the game. For nearly six minutes, the Oilers picked up 50 yards and ran 15 plays, but were held to a field goal, a 42-yarder by sophomore Austin Snyder.
The Eagles then scored 21 unanswered points en route to their 25-point victory.
One of the major keys to the contest was the time of possession where Ashland boasted a major advantage. The Eagles had the ball for 38:32 to just 21:28 for Findlay.
In the game, Ashland ran 78 plays for 368 yards while the Oilers had 141 yards on 46 plays.
Senior quarterback Jeremy Hunt finished the day 10-for-22 for 82 yards and an interception. Junior Tanner Schroeder, the leading receiver last week against Ohio Dominican, again led the team with 23 receiving yards, this time on two catches.
Senior Derek Lynch was the leading rusher with 28 yards on nine carries.
Linebacker Kyle Nunn led the Oilers with 12 tackles on the night including a half-tackle for loss. Senior Marqis Stokes and junior Grey Brancifort each had 11 tackles with a tackle-for-loss while senior Kijana Caldwell had 11 tackles including a sack.
Junior Dalton Rockhold led the defensive line as he picked up seven stops including 1.5 tackles-for-loss.
The Oilers will be back in action next Saturday, Sep. 17 when they play host to Southwest Baptist University.
