Big 2nd Half Gives Oilers 80-55 Win Over Lake Erie

Box Score

The University of Findlay men's basketball team used a huge second half effort to defeat Lake Erie College by a score of 80-55 on Thursday, January 26 in Croy Gymnasium.  The victory gives the Oilers a 14-4 record on the season with an 8-3 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

Trailing 37-30 with just over three minutes remaining in the first half, the Oilers went on an 8-0 spurt that was capped off by a three pointer from sophomore guard Sean Samsel just before the horn sounded.  The 8-0 run gave Findlay momentum, which was carried over into the second period.

The Oilers came out pressuring on both ends of the floor in the second half and the Storm, who hit 62.5 percent (15-of-24) of their shots in the opening period, went cold while Findlay remained hot.

In the decisive period, the Oilers out-scored Lake Erie by a 42-18 margin and held them to a mere 30.4 percent (7-of-23) shooting clip.

As a team, the Oilers shot a season-high 61.9 percent (26-of-42) from the floor, their second straight game with a shooting percentage above 60.  They also out-rebounded the Storm by a 32-21 margin and connected on 9-of-18 (50%) three point attempts.

Junior guard Aaron Robinson led the team with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting while junior forward Brad Piehl had 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Sophomore forward Greg Kahlig also reached double figures with 12 points to go along with five rebounds while Samsel came off the bench to contribute eight points during the win.

No Lake Erie player reached double figures as Matt Grendel and Riley Thomas scored nine points apiece to lead the way.

The Oilers will host Ashland University on Saturday at 3 pm in Croy Gymnasium.
