#13 Oilers Home for 3 Games this Week

The University of Findlay men's basketball team will be at home for three games next week beginning on Monday, Nov. 26 when they host Notre Dame College at 7:30 p.m.  They will then open up Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Thursday against Lake Superior State University (6 p.m.) and then host Northwood University on Saturday (1 p.m.) in Croy Gymnasium.

The Series

The Oilers hold a 2-0 lead in the all-time series against Notre Dame dating back to the 2006-07 campaign when they came away with an 83-65 win behind 16 points from Josh Bostic.

The Oilers won the only other matchup last season at home by a score of 98-57.

Kyle Caiola led four Oilers in double figures with 15 points while Greg Kahlig added 14 points and eight rebounds.

Jake Heagen poured in 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench while Jack Smith had 11 points and five boards.

The Oilers shot 61.8 percent (42-of-68) from the floor and out-rebounded the Falcons by a 40-20 margin.

Findlay also set a school record with 30 assists in the contest.

Sean Samsel led the team with five assists and also contributed eight points and four steals during the win.

The Oilers hold an 18-2 advantage in the all-time series against Lake Superior State dating back to the 1997-98 season when Findlay came away with a 68-57 win.

Last year the Oilers ended their regular season against the Lakers at home with a 75-62 win behind 24 points from Caiola.

He also added six rebounds and five assists while hitting 4-of-6 attempts from three point range.

Heagen added 11 points while Kahlig and Smith contributed ten points apiece.

The Oilers forced 16 turnovers in the victory and connected on 9-of-22 (40.9%) three point attempts.

Against Northwood, the Oilers hold a 20-5 advantage in the all-time series dating back to the 1962-63 campaign when they defeated the Timberwolves by a 92-73 margin.

Last season the Oilers came away with a 78-64 win over Northwood in Croy Gymnasium behind 19 points from Jack Smith.

Brad Piehl added 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting while Kahlig chipped in 11 points and three rebounds.

The Oilers shot 52.9 percent (27-of-51) from the floor in the win and held a 22-7 advantage in points off the bench.

They also connected on 5-of-9 (55.6%) shot attempts from behind the three point line in the victory.

The University of Findlay

The Oilers claimed a 74-65 win over Cedarville University on Saturday, Nov. 17 in Croy Gymnasium. 

The Oilers narrowly held a one-point lead at the break as they entered halftime with a 31-30 lead.  They then out-scored the Yellow Jackets by a 43-35 margin in the second period to pull away despite shooting only 39.1 percent (18-of-46) from the field.

Findlay hit only 3-of-14 (21.4%) shot attempts from behind the three point line and did most of their damage at the charity stripe where they connected on 35-of-40 (87.5%) tries.

Greg Kahlig led the way with 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting.  Kahlig also added six rebounds and made 8-of-10 attempts from the free throw line in the game.

Brad Piehl also reached double figures with 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting.  Piehl also recorded six rebounds while making 8-of-9 free throw attempts in the win.

Jake Heagen and Sean Samsel narrowly missed out on reaching double figures with nine points each while Aaron Robinson stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Notre Dame College

The Falcons are 1-2 on the season and are coming off of a 92-80 loss at home against Lake Erie.

Eric Dummermuth leads the team and is averaging 24.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.  Tyree Gaiter is also off to a hot start with averages of 16.0 points, 5.3 assists and 4.7 rebounds per outing while Lawrence DeArmond is clicking for 15.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest.

Lake Superior State University

The Lakers are 2-1 on the year and coming off of an 82-65 win over St. Joseph's on the road.

Derek Billing leads the team with 18.7 points per game while Derek Kinney is averaging 15.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest.

Northwood University

The Timberwolves have a 1-3 record on the season are coming off of a 74-67 loss at home to #11 Winona State.

Northwood features a balanced offensive attack with six players averaging in double figures or near double figures on a nightly basis.

Wes Wilcox (11.8), Alex Vandierendonck (11.5), Dylan Langkabel (11.2), Will Bowles (11.0), Darvin Ham (9.2) and Booker Stoudmire (9.2) have led the squad thus far.

Simply the Best

The Oilers have the best winning percentage in NCAA Division II competition since the year 2000, having won 311 games and lost only 65 for an overall winning percentage of .827.

A Tough Place to Play

The Oilers are 530-111 (.827) in Croy Gymnasium since they starting playing home games there during the 1969-70 season.  The number is even better in the past nine years as the Oilers are a staggering 154-4 at home for a winning percentage of .975.

1,000-Point Club

The Oilers have several players who will look to reach the 1,000-point plateau this season.

Senior guard Aaron Robinson has the best chance as he has accumulated 793 points during his tenure with the team.

Senior forward Jack Smith has scored 694 points while junior Greg Kahlig has recorded 667 points with the program.

GLIAC Player of the Week

Junior forward Greg Kahlig was named the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week on Nov. 19 for his performances against #1 West Liberty State and Cedarville.

In the Oilers 90-74 loss to #1 West Liberty State (11/14), Kahlig had 14 points, three rebounds and three assists.  He then followed with 23 points and six boards in the Oilers 74-65 win over Cedarville (11/17).

The Ft. Recovery, Ohio native also shot 65 percent from the floor and 81.8 percent from the free throw line in the two games.

On the Winning Side

The Oilers have not had a losing season since the 1981-82 campaign when they finished with a 9-17 record.  Since that losing season, the Oilers have achieved a 670-229 (.745) record.

The 20-Win Plateau

The Oilers have achieved 20 wins in each of the past 11 years and sport a sparkling 291-56 (.839) record since the 2001-02 campaign. 

Racking up the Victories

The Oilers have been playing basketball since the 1902-03 campaign and have amassed a 1,422-852-2 (.625) record since their initial season of competition.

Scoring 100

The Oilers have reached the 100-point plateau 175 times since 1902 and have a 169-6 (.966) record in those games.

Dominating GLIAC Home Games

The Oilers have won 76 straight GLIAC games at home during the regular season. 

Their last loss at home in conference play came in 70-68 fashion against Gannon University on February 12, 2004.

Handling Non-Conference Foes

The Oilers have posted a 78-5 record (.940) against non-conference opponents in games played at Croy Gymnasium during the past ten years.

Their last loss at home to a non-conference team came against #1 West Liberty State by a score of 90-74 on Nov. 14, 2012.

Conference Championships

The Oilers have won ten GLIAC South Division titles in their 16-year affiliation with the conference and have also won six conference tournaments, capturing titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012.

In the last 11 years, the Oilers have won nine GLIAC South Division titles.  Overall, Findlay has won GLIAC South Division titles in 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

GLIAC Tournament Success

The Oilers sport a 25-6 record in the GLIAC Tournament, winning titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012. 

Findlay has appeared in the championship game of the event eight times in the past ten years.  They reached the finals in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Findlay is tied with Grand Valley State for a GLIAC best six league tournament titles.

Taking Care of Business

The Oilers have never lost a GLIAC Tournament game at home.  Since 2002-03, the Oilers have an 18-0 record in GLIAC Tournament games within the friendly confines of Croy Gymnasium.

Dancing

The Oilers have appeared in ten out of the last 11 NCAA Division II National Tournaments with a 16-9 record, reaching the Elite Eight during the 2004-05 campaign and the Final Four in the 2008-09 season when they captured their first NCAA Division II National Championship.

They also reached the Sweet 16 during the 2007-08 campaign.

GLIAC Preseason Poll

The University of Findlay men's basketball team was picked as the favorite to win the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division as the league office announced their annual preseason poll on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The Oilers finished last year with a 24-7 record, received 17 first place votes and a total of 178 votes overall in the poll.

Hillsdale College came in second in the South Division with five first place votes and 159 votes overall while Ashland University was third with 140 votes, capturing one first place vote as well.

Michigan Technological University is the early favorite to win the North Division after totaling eight first place votes and 157 votes overall.  The Huskies edged Wayne State University in the poll, who received 155 total votes and nine first place votes.

Preseason All-GLIAC Teams

Senior guard Aaron Robinson and junior forward Greg Kahlig were each tabbed as preseason first team all-conference selections.

Robinson, who has been named to the all-defensive team in each of the past two seasons, averaged 7.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game last year.

Kahlig was a second team all-conference pick last year after averaging 12.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.  He also shot 52.2 percent from the field, 82.6 percent from the free throw line and 41.1 percent from behind the three point arc.
