Men's Basketball Hosts Ashland, Lake Erie this Week

The Oilers men's basketball team will be at home for a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division games this week against Ashland University and Lake Erie College.  The Oilers will host the Eagles on Thursday at 6 p.m. before battling the Storm on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Special Events

Thursday's men's and women's games against Ashland will be Pink Day, an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer.  Fans who wear pink to the game will receive $1 off their price of admission. 

The 2013 Chili Cook-Off will be held in the Koehler Fitness and Recreation Complex after Saturday's basketball games against Lake Erie.  The event is sponsored by Cancer Patient Services and those who purchase a ticket to the basketball games, will receive free admission to the Chili Cook-Off.

The Series

The Oilers hold a 58-27 advantage in the all-time series dating back to the 1910-11 campaign when Findlay won 35-10.

The Eagles defeated the Oilers by a score of 61-60 on a last second bucket on Jan. 17 in Ashland.

Findlay shot 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the floor, connecting on only 6-of-21 (28.6%) three point tries. 

The Eagles meanwhile shot 40 percent (24-of-60) from the field and out-rebounded the Oilers by a 44-32 margin.

Greg Kahlig led the team with a game-high 21 points.

The Eagles were led by Evan Yates and Ronnie Steward, who each had 15 points in the game.

The Oilers have never lost to the Storm as they hold a 14-0 advantage in the all-time series dating back to the 1988-89 campaign when Findlay was victorious by a score of 84-51.

Earlier this season the Oilers earned an 83-68 win over Lake Erie in Painesville, Ohio behind 30 points from Greg Kahlig.  Kahlig connected on 8-of-13 shots from the field and drained 5-of-6 shots from behind the three point line.  He also made all nine of his attempts from the free throw line and contributed five boards as well.

Brad Piehl added 12 points and six rebounds while Alphonso Baity had ten points in the win.

Mark Frilling and Jack Smith provided punch off the bench for Findlay as well, contributing nine and eight points, respectively.  Dylan Kaufman also had a good game off the pine, scoring seven points to go along with three assists.

The University of Findlay

The Oilers came away with an 81-60 win over Tiffin University on Saturday, Feb. 9 in Tiffin, Ohio.

The Oilers, who led by only a point at half, connected on 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from long range in the second half, improving their record to 15-6 on the season with a 12-5 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

Greg Kahlig burned the nets with a career-high 33-points (11-of-18),  connecting on a career-high 7-of-9 from behind the three point line. He also drained four of his five free throw attempts and contributed seven rebounds.

Brad Piehl added ten points and eight rebounds while Alphonso Baity had nine points and three boards.

Sean Samsel and Dylan Kaufman each chipped in eight points for the Oilers off the bench. Jack Smith also contributed with three points and four rebounds.

As a team, Findlay shot 48.3 percent (28-58) from the field and 55.6 percent (10-18) from long range while sinking 15-of-18 from the charity stripe.  The Oilers also out-rebounded Tiffin 37-30 in the contest, holding their opposition to 42.6 percent shooting.

Ashland University

The Eagles are 9-11 this season with a 7-10 record in conference play.  Evan Yates is leading the team with averages of 16.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.

Will Evans is also contributing 9.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest.

Lake Erie College

The Storm have a 7-14 record on the year with a 4-13 mark in GLIAC play.  Riley Thomas is averaging 13.5 points per game to lead the team while Jamil Dudley and Rich Austin are contributing 10.9 and 10.5 points per game, respectively.

Simply the Best

The Oilers have the best winning percentage in NCAA Division II competition since the year 2000, having won 325 games and lost only 69 for an overall winning percentage of .825.

Scoring in Bunches

Junior forward Greg Kahlig is ranked 11th in the GLIAC in points per game as he is averaging 16.0 per outing.

The Oilers are averaging 72.5 points per game this season, the fifth best mark in the league.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 7.9 steals per game, which ranks third in the conference.

Sophomore forward Jake Heagen leads the team with 1.2 steals per contest.

Getting to the Line

The Oilers have made a big impact on the offensive end with their ability to get to the free throw line and rank first in the conference in free throws made (380) and free throw shooting percentage (77.1%).

The Oilers free throw shooting percentage is also the fifth best mark in the nation.

Individually, senior forward Brad Piehl ranks sixth in the conference with a 88.0 percent shooting mark from the charity stripe.  His free throw shooting percentage is also the 16th best mark in the nation.

Raining 3's

The Oilers have made 155 three pointers this season, the third best total in the GLIAC.

Junior forward Greg Kahlig leads the team with 42 made triples while senior guard Aaron Robinson is second with 34.

Pounding the Boards

The Oilers are averaging 36.5 rebounds per game, the second best total in the GLIAC.

Sophomore forward Jake Heagen leads the team with 5.5 rebounds per game.

Defense Wins Championships

The Oilers are holding their opponents to 63.1 points per game, which is the fourth best mark in the GLIAC.

Defending the 3

The Oilers have had excellent perimeter defense this season making it difficult for opponents to get good looks at three point opportunities.  The team is holding opponents to a mere 28.1 percent shooting clip from long range, the fifth best mark in the nation.

1,000-Point Club

The Oilers have several players who will look to reach the 1,000-point plateau this season.

Senior guard Aaron Robinson has 965 points during his tenure with the team while junior forward Greg Kahlig has also scored 965 points thus far.

Senior forward Jack Smith also has a chance to reach the milestone, having scored 847 points with the program.

Racking up the Victories

The Oilers have been playing basketball since the 1902-03 campaign and have amassed a 1,436-857-2 (.626) record since their initial season of competition.

A Tough Place to Play

The Oilers are 538-112 (.827) in Croy Gymnasium since they starting playing home games there during the 1969-70 season.  The number is even better in the past ten years as the Oilers are a staggering 162-5 at home for a winning percentage of .970.

Dominating GLIAC Home Games

The Oilers have won 82 of their last 83 conference games at home.  They fell 57-55 to Tiffin University on Jan. 12, 2013.  Before that game, their last loss came in 70-68 fashion against Gannon University on February 12, 2004.

Handling Non-Conference Foes

The Oilers have posted a 74-3 record (.961) against non-conference opponents in games played at Croy Gymnasium during the past ten years.

Their last loss at home to a non-conference team came against #1 West Liberty State by a score of 90-74 on Nov. 14, 2012.

Conference Championships

The Oilers have won ten GLIAC South Division titles in their 16-year affiliation with the conference and have also won six conference tournaments, capturing titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012.

In the last 11 years, the Oilers have won nine GLIAC South Division titles.  Overall, Findlay has won GLIAC South Division titles in 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

GLIAC Tournament Success

The Oilers sport a 25-6 record in the GLIAC Tournament, winning titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012. 

Findlay has appeared in the championship game of the event eight times in the past ten years.  They reached the finals in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Findlay is tied with Grand Valley State for a GLIAC best six league tournament titles.

Dancing

The Oilers have appeared in ten out of the last 11 NCAA Division II National Tournaments with a 16-9 record, reaching the Elite Eight during the 2004-05 campaign and the Final Four in the 2008-09 season when they captured their first NCAA Division II National Championship.

They also reached the Sweet 16 during the 2007-08 campaign.

Taking Care of Business

The Oilers have never lost a GLIAC Tournament game at home.  Since 2002-03, the Oilers have an 18-0 record in GLIAC Tournament games within the friendly confines of Croy Gymnasium.
