#11 Oilers Head to Cedarville on Thursday

The Oilers, ranked 11th nationally, will hit the road to battle Cedarville on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Center Court with Charlie Ernst

Don't forget to tune into 88.3 FM "WLFC" for Center Court with Charlie Ernst.  The radio show will be broadcast live from Fricker's every Monday evening during the season.  The show will be aired live from 6-7 p.m.  Fans are encouraged to attend the show so they can listen live over the sound system and enjoy the great food Fricker's has to offer.

Series Information

The Oilers hold a 67-22 advantage in the all-time series against Cedarville as the two programs have been meeting on the hardwood since 1910.

The two programs met last season and Findlay came away with a 74-65 win in Croy Gymnasium.

The Oilers narrowly held a one-point lead at the break as they entered halftime with a 31-30 lead.  They then out-scored the Yellow Jackets by a 43-35 margin in the second period to pull away despite shooting only 39.1 percent (18-of-46) from the field.

Findlay hit only 3-of-14 (21.4%) shot attempts from behind the three point line and did most of their damage at the charity stripe where they connected on 35-of-40 (87.5%) tries.

Greg Kahlig led the way with 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting.  Kahlig also added six rebounds and made 8-of-10 attempts from the free throw line in the game.

Brad Piehl also reached double figures with 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting.  in the win.

Findlay

The #11 Findlay Oilers men's basketball team won their first game of the year 105-50 against Marygrove College on Saturday, Nov. 9 in Croy Gymnasium.

The Oilers built a 20-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game and never looked back as they cruised to the victory.

Findlay held a 60-16 advantage in points in the paint and got 62 points from their bench in the win.  They connected on 50 percent (42-of-84) of their field goal attempts and grabbed 59 rebounds in the game.

Greg Kahlig and Austin Gardner led six Findlay players in double figures with 14 points apiece.

Kahlig also added eight rebounds and three assists in 15 minutes while Gardner grabbed five boards and dished out two assists in the game.

Quaran Jones narrowly missed a double-double in his first game for the Oilers with 12 points and nine rebounds while Ricardo Smith stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block.

Jake Heagen contributed 11 points, three rebounds and three steals and Tyler Stern-Tucker had ten points and five boards.

Cedarville

The Yellow Jackets are 1-1 on the year and have been led by J.C. Faubion, who is averaging 19.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

Jason Cuffee is scoring 16.0 points per outing while Brian Grant is averaging 14.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.

Leighton Smith is also off to a good start, averaging 13.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest.

Winning Big

The Oilers began the season with a 55-point victory at home against Marygrove.  The team saw six players reach double figures including four freshmen.  The four freshmen combined for 47 points and 27 rebounds in the win.

Freshman guard Austin Gardner had 14 points and five rebounds, freshman center Quaran Jones recorded 12 points and nine boards, freshman guard Ricardo Smith had 11 points and eight rebounds and freshman forward Tyler Stern-Tucker registered ten points and five boards in the win.

Dominating the Glass

The Oilers registered 59 rebounds in their 105-50 win over Marygrove and had six players grab five or more.

Freshman center Quaran Jones (9), freshman guard Ricardo Smith (8), senior forward Greg Kahlig (8), senior center Chris Baldwin (6), freshman guard Austin Gardner (5) and freshman forward Tyler Stern-Tucker (5) all grabbed five or more rebounds in the victory.

Preseason GLIAC Player of the Year

Senior forward Greg Kahlig was voted the favorite to win the player of the year award in the GLIAC for the 2013-14 season.

Kahlig was a first team all-conference and first team all-region performer for the Oilers last season when he averaged 17.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Preseason Favorites

The Oilers were picked as the preseason favorite to win the GLIAC South Division as they received a league-best 24 first place votes in the annual poll.  They also had a league-high 192 votes and are coming off of back-to-back GLIAC Tournament victories.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior forward Greg Kahlig and junior forward Jake Heagen were each named first team all-conference in the preseason.

Kahlig averaged 17.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game last year for the Oilers while Heagen sported averages of 8.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest.

Preseason National Rankings

The Oilers were ranked 11th in the preseason National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) poll.

The Oilers won their second straight GLIAC Tournament title last year and finished the season ranked 22nd in the nation with a 22-8 record.  They reached the NCAA Division II National Tournament, but were eliminated in the first round by Drury University, who eventually claimed the national title.

Preseason All-American

Senior forward Greg Kahlig was picked as a preseason All-American by NCAA Division II Bulletin after being named first team all-region and first team all-conference last year for the Oilers.

The Ft. Recovery, Ohio native averaged 17.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game during his junior season.  He also shot 48.9 percent from the floor, 44.1 percent from behind the three point line and 84.6 percent from the charity stripe.

An Elite Program

The Oilers have the second best winning percentage in NCAA Division II competition since the year 2000, having won 333 games and lost only 73 for an overall winning percentage of .820.

Racking up the Victories

The Oilers have been playing basketball since the 1902-03 campaign and have amassed a 1,444-859-2 (.626) record since their initial season of competition.

1,000-Point Club

Senior forward Greg Kahlig ranks 36th all-time at Findlay with 1,155 career points. 

He is chasing Lee Himmeger (1953-56) and Ron Marquette (1952-55) for 34th place on the all-time scoring list as both players poured in 1,162 points during their time with the Oilers.

A Tough Place to Play

The Oilers are 544-112 (.829) in Croy Gymnasium since they starting playing home games there during the 1969-70 season.  The number is even better in the past ten years as the Oilers are a staggering 154-4 at home for a winning percentage of .975.

Dominating GLIAC Home Games

The Oilers have won 86 of their last 87 regular season conference games at home.  They fell 57-55 to Tiffin University on Jan. 12, 2013.  Before that game, their last loss came in 70-68 fashion against Gannon University on February 12, 2004.

Handling Non-Conference Foes

The Oilers have posted a 68-3 record (.958) against non-conference opponents in games played at Croy Gymnasium during the past ten years.

Their last loss at home to a non-conference team came against #1 West Liberty State by a score of 90-74 on Nov. 14, 2012.

GLIAC Tournament Success

The Oilers sport a 28-6 record in the GLIAC Tournament, winning titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. 

Findlay has appeared in the championship game of the event nine times in the past 11 years.  They reached the finals in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. 

The Oilers have captured seven GLIAC Tournament titles, the most in league history.  Their win in the 2013 tournament gave them two in a row away from home, the first time a school has ever accomplished the feat in the GLIAC.

Taking Care of Business

The Oilers have never lost a GLIAC Tournament game at home.  Since 2002-03, the Oilers have an 19-0 record in GLIAC Tournament games within the friendly confines of Croy Gymnasium.

The 20-Win Plateau

The Oilers have achieved 20 wins in each of the past 12 years and sport a sparkling 313-64 (.830) record since the 2001-02 campaign.

Dancing

The Oilers have appeared in 11 out of the last 12 NCAA Division II National Tournaments with a 16-10 record, reaching the Elite Eight during the 2004-05 campaign and the Final Four in the 2008-09 season when they captured their first NCAA Division II National Championship.

They also reached the Sweet 16 during the 2007-08 campaign.

Conference Championships

The Oilers have won 11 GLIAC South Division titles in their 16-year affiliation with the conference and have also won seven conference tournaments, capturing titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013.  Their seven tournament titles are the most in GLIAC history.

In the last 12 years, the Oilers have won ten GLIAC South Division titles.  Overall, Findlay has won GLIAC South Division titles in 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013.
