#15 Oilers Host Falcons on Saturday

The #15 Oilers men's basketball team will host Notre Dame (Ohio) College on Saturday, Dec. 21.  The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium.

Don't forget to tune into 88.3 FM "WLFC" for Center Court with Charlie Ernst.  The radio show will be broadcast live from Fricker's on Monday evenings during the season.  The show will be aired live from 6-7 p.m.  Fans are encouraged to attend the show so they can listen live over the sound system and enjoy the great food Fricker's has to offer.

Series Information

The Oilers hold a 3-0 lead in the all-time series against Notre Dame dating back to the 2006-07 campaign when they came away with an 83-65 win behind 16 points from Josh Bostic.

Last season the Oilers came away with an 86-58 win over the Falcons as they out-rebounded Notre Dame by a 55-36 margin, which included an incredible 34 offensive boards.

Findlay connected on only 34.7 percent (26-of-75) of their field goal attempts, but drained 12-of-28 (42.9%) shots from behind the three point line.  They also held the Falcons to a 38.6 percent (22-of-57) shooting clip in the victory.

Greg Kahlig led four Oilers players in double figures with 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Aaron Robinson scored 13 points and Alphonso Baity contributed 13 points and four rebounds.

Jack Smith had ten points and six boards off the bench while Jake Heagen stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block.

Findlay

The Oilers had to grind out a 78-69 victory over Northern Michigan University last Saturday in Croy Gymnasium to give them a 6-1 record on the year. 

Findlay jumped out to a 43-33 lead at the break, but a 30.8 percent (8-of-26) clip in the second half allowed the Wildcats to creep back in the game.  The Oilers eventually sunk some free throws down the stretch to remain perfect at home this year.

Dylan Kaufman had a career day for the Oilers, posting personal highs in points and rebounds.  The Berlin, Ohio native finished the game with 20 points and eight rebounds while also recording four steals.

Jake Heagen stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists while Alphonso Baity had 11 points and three helpers.

Greg Kahlig hit only 1-of-9 shot attempts in the win, but still posted ten points and seven rebounds.

The Oilers only shot 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from the floor in the game, but did connect on a season-high 32-of-41 (78%) attempts from the free throw line.  They also out-rebounded the Wildcats 41-35 and dished out 14 assists in the victory.

The Wildcats were led by Chavis Mattison, who came off the bench to record 21 points and seven boards.

Notre Dame (Ohio)

The Falcons are 3-7 on the season and are coming off of a 97-72 loss at Cleveland State on Wednesday.

Tyree Gaiter leads the team with a scoring average of 21.0 per game while Lawrence Dearmond and Jarvis Huntley are averaging 19.9 and 18.8 points per contest, respectively.

An Elite Program

The Oilers have the second best winning percentage in NCAA Division II competition since the year 2000, having won 338 games and lost only 74 for an overall winning percentage of .820.

1,000-Point Club

Senior forward Greg Kahlig ranks 26th all-time at Findlay with 1,285 career points.  He is chasing Bill Kotterman (1978-81) for 25th place on the Oilers all-time scoring list.

Kotterman scored 1,303 career points with the Oilers during his tenure.

Kahlig scored a season-high 32 points in the Oilers 86-73 win over Michigan Tech on Dec. 12.

Getting Buckets

Senior forward Greg Kahlig is averaging 20.6 points per game this season, the eighth best total in the GLIAC.

The Oilers have not had any player average over 20 points per game in a season since Greg Denecker put up 20.3 points per contest during the 1993-94 campaign.

As a team the Oilers are averaging 88.4 points per game, the second best mark in the conference and 28th best output in the nation. 

Pounding the Boards

The Oilers are averaging 41.1 rebounds per game this season, the third best total in the GLIAC.  They are led by junior forward Jake Heagen, who ranks fifth in the GLIAC with 8.1 rebounds per contest.

Heagen has recorded two double-doubles so far this season.  He had 13 points and 12 rebounds in a 96-68 win at Cedarville on Nov. 14 and recorded 20 points and 11 boards during the Oilers 86-69 loss at Northwood on Dec. 7.

Playing Smart

The Oilers lead the leagueand rank 11th nationally in fewest turnovers per game, averaging only 9.6 per contest. 

Individually, sophomore guard Dylan Kaufman ranks fifth in the league with a 5.0 assists/turnover ratio.

Swatting Shots

Findlay is blocking 4.1 shots per game, the third best total in the GLIAC.  They have been led by sophomore guard Alphonso Baity, who ranks 13th in the league with a 0.9 blocked shot per game average.

Sharing the Rock

The Oilers are averaging 16.3 assists per game this year, the fifth best mark in the GLIAC.  Sophomore guard Alphonso Baity leads the team with 3.7 assists per game, the tenth best total in the league.

Automatic from the Line

Junior forward Jake Heagen is connecting on 91.3 percent of his free throw attempts this year, the fourth best mark in the GLIAC.  His shooting percentage from the charity stripe is also the 27th best clip in the nation.

Putting the Ball in the Hole

The Oilers are shooting 50.2 percent from the field this season, the third best shooting clip in the GLIAC.

Sophomore forward John Staley leads the team with a 75.0 percent shooting clip while red-shirt freshman Quaran Jones is putting the ball in the hole at a 63.2 percent clip.

Defense Wins Championships

The Oilers are holding their opponents to a 39.5 percent shooting clip, the second best mark in the league.

Racking up the Victories

The Oilers have been playing basketball since the 1902-03 campaign and have amassed a 1,449-860-2 (.627) record since their initial season of competition.

A Tough Place to Play

The Oilers are 546-112 (.829) in Croy Gymnasium since they starting playing home games there during the 1969-70 season.  The number is even better in the past ten years as the Oilers are a staggering 156-4 at home for a winning percentage of .975.

Dominating GLIAC Home Games

The Oilers have won 88 of their last 89 regular season conference games at home.  They fell 57-55 to Tiffin University on Jan. 12, 2013.  Before that game, their last loss came in 70-68 fashion against Gannon University on February 12, 2004.

Handling Non-Conference Foes

The Oilers have posted a 68-3 record (.958) against non-conference opponents in games played at Croy Gymnasium during the past ten years.

Their last loss at home to a non-conference team came against #1 West Liberty State by a score of 90-74 on Nov. 14, 2012.

The 20-Win Plateau

The Oilers have achieved 20 wins in each of the past 12 years.  The last time they failed to reach the 20-win plateau came during the 2000-01 campaign when they went 19-11.

Kahlig Named GLIAC Player of the Week

Senior forward Greg Kahlg was named the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week on Nov. 20 for his performances in the Oilers first three games of the 2013-14 season.

Kahlig averaged 21.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in helping the Oilers start the season with a 3-0 record.  The Ft. Recovery, Ohio native also shot 55.6 percent from the floor, 43.8 percent from behind the three point line and 80.0 percent from the charity stripe in the three contests.

Conference Championships

The Oilers have won 11 GLIAC South Division titles in their 16-year affiliation with the conference and have also won seven conference tournaments, capturing titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013.  Their seven tournament titles are the most in GLIAC history.

In the last 12 years, the Oilers have won ten GLIAC South Division titles.  Overall, Findlay has won GLIAC South Division titles in 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013.

GLIAC Tournament Success

The Oilers sport a 28-6 record in the GLIAC Tournament, winning titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. 

Findlay has appeared in the championship game of the event nine times in the past 11 years.  They reached the finals in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. 

The Oilers have captured seven GLIAC Tournament titles, the most in league history.  Their win in the 2013 tournament gave them two in a row away from home, the first time a school has ever accomplished the feat in the GLIAC.

Taking Care of Business

The Oilers have never lost a GLIAC Tournament game at home.  Since 2002-03, the Oilers have an 19-0 record in GLIAC Tournament games within the friendly confines of Croy Gymnasium.

Dancing

The Oilers have appeared in 11 out of the last 12 NCAA Division II National Tournaments with a 16-10 record, reaching the Elite Eight during the 2004-05 campaign and the Final Four in the 2008-09 season when they captured their first NCAA Division II National Championship.

They also reached the Sweet 16 during the 2007-08 campaign.

Preseason GLIAC Player of the Year

Senior forward Greg Kahlig was voted the favorite to win the player of the year award in the GLIAC for the 2013-14 season.

Kahlig was a first team all-conference and first team all-region performer for the Oilers last season when he averaged 17.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Preseason Favorites

The Oilers were picked as the preseason favorite to win the GLIAC South Division as they received a league-best 24 first place votes in the annual poll.  They also had a league-high 192 votes and are coming off of back-to-back GLIAC Tournament victories.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior forward Greg Kahlig and junior forward Jake Heagen were each named first team all-conference in the preseason.

Kahlig averaged 17.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game last year for the Oilers while Heagen sported averages of 8.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest.

Preseason All-American

Senior forward Greg Kahlig was picked as a preseason All-American by NCAA Division II Bulletin after being named first team all-region and first team all-conference last year for the Oilers.

The Ft. Recovery, Ohio native averaged 17.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game during his junior season.  He also shot 48.9 percent from the floor, 44.1 percent from behind the three point line and 84.6 percent from the charity stripe.
