Kahlig Scores GLIAC Record 55 Points in Win
Senior forward Greg Kahlig of the Oilers men's basketball team scored a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) record 55 points in Findlay's 104-74 win over Walsh University on Saturday, March 8 in Croy Gymnasium.
Kahlig's big day enabled the Oilers to advance to the finals of the 2014 GLIAC Tournament, a spot Findlay has been in ten times during the past 12 years.
The Ft. Recovery, Ohio native came out firing in the first half as he lit up the Cavaliers for 36 points in the opening period. He had the three point stroke going early and often as he connected on eight triples during the first 20 minutes of the game.
In the second half, Kahlig continued to stay hot and ended the game with 55 points, the second highest total ever scored by a Findlay player. His big day left him six points shy of the school record 61 points set by Herk Wolfe on Feb. 28, 1953 against Central State University.
The 2014 GLIAC Player of the Year finished the game by hitting 19-of-28 shot attempts. Both his makes and attempts were good enough to establish new GLIAC Tournament records. He also canned 10-of-17 attempts from behind the three point line as both marks established new school and GLIAC Tournament records.
Kahlig's big day of 55 points moved him into sixth place on the Oilers all-time scoring list with 1,833 career points. He will be chasing Kyle Hunt (1999-02) for fifth place as Hunt put up 1,840 points during his tenure with the team.
Sophomore guard Dylan Kaufman also had a great game for the Oilers, scoring 15 points. He also added a career-high six assists and three boards in the game.
Sophomore guard Alphonso Baity had nine points, four assists and four rebounds while junior forward Jake Heagen chipped in five points and seven boards.
The Oilers, who improved to 23-5 on the year with the win, shot 58.5 percent (38-of-65) from the floor and drilled 14-of-25 (56%) attempts from three point range. They also out-rebounded the Cavaliers by a 34-25 margin and racked up 20 assists in the game.
The Cavaliers shot 44.2 percent (23-of-52) from the floor and were led by Jeff Copeland and Hrvoje Vucic, who each scored 14 points apiece in the game.
The Oilers will now face Michigan Technological University in the championship game at 2 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium.
Michigan Tech advanced to the finals with a 75-62 win over Malone. Austin Armga led the way with 26 points while Ben Stelzer had 21.
Isiah Elliott led the Malone with 22 points, six rebounds and six assists.
