#21 Oilers Open GLIAC Play Against Northwood/Lake Superior

The 21st-ranked Oilers men's basketball team will kick off Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at home this week against Northwood and Lake Superior State. The Oilers will host the Timberwolves on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. before welcoming the Lakers to town on Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest in Croy Gymnasium.

Series Information

Findlay is currently leading the all-time series against Northwood by a 21-6 margin dating back to the 1962-63 campaign when they defeated the Timberwolves by a 92-73 margin.

The Timberwolves claimed an 86-69 win over the Oilers last season in Midland, Mich. as Findlay shot only 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from the floor and connected on a mere 3-of-25 (12%) shot attempts from behind the three point line.

Jake Heagen led the team with 20 points and 11 rebounds while Greg Kahlig contributed nine points, but hit only 2-of-16 shot attempts in the game.  He also missed all eight of his three point tries, but added four rebounds, two assists and a block.

John Staley had eight points and Ricardo Smith came off the bench to record six points in the loss.

The Timberwolves had four players reach double figures as Darvin Ham led the way with 21 points and nine boards.  Wes Wilcox and Dylan Langkabel had 17 points apiece while Khalid King contributed 16 points in the game.

The Oilers hold a 19-3 advantage in the all-time series against Lake Superior State dating back to the 1997-98 season when Findlay came away with a 68-57 win.

Findlay went 1-1 against Lake Superior State last season, winning 88-78 during the regular season before losing 88-83 in overtime during the first round of the NCAA Division II National Tournament in Springfield, Mo.

In the win at Lake Superior State during the regular season, Greg Kahlig led the way with 28 points on 8-of-14 shooting.  He also drained 3-of-5 shot attempts from three point land and connected on 9-of-13 attempts from the charity stripe.

In the loss during the tourney, Jake Heagen led the team with 24 points and six rebounds while Kahlig had 22 points and four boards. 

Dylan Kaufman finished the contest with 12 points and six rebounds for the Oilers as well.

Tony Harris led the Lakers with 25 points while Derek Billing, Cameron Metz and Alex Williams each contributed 16 points apiece.

Findlay

The Oilers dropped a 63-54 decision to 10th-ranked Bellarmine University on Sunday, Nov. 23 in Louisville, Ky in their last game.

The Oilers scratched and clawed their way through the first half and when the opening period ended, they trailed the Knights by three at 30-27. The Knights then got rolling in the second half, opening the period on an 18-4 run, but the Oilers again showed fight as they went on an 11-0 run to cut the lead to six at 48-42 with just under eight minutes to play.  Findlay remained within striking distance of the Knights for the rest of the game, but the Oilers could not get any closer than six points as they suffered their first loss of the year.

The Oilers did not shoot the ball well in the contest as they connected on only 32.2 percent (19-of-59) of their shot attempts. The Knights, who are annually one of the top shooting teams in the nation, shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the floor in the game.  Bellarmine held a 39-38 lead on the boards and only committed 11 fouls, compared to 21 for Findlay.

Tyler Stern-Tucker led the Oilers with a career-high 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting. He hit 3-of-6 attempts from behind the three point line while also grabbing six rebounds in the game.

Jake Heagen had nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks while John Staley recorded eight points, three rebounds and three assists.  Elijah Kahlig contributed six points off the bench for Findlay as well.

Northwood

The Timberwolves are 3-1 on the season and are coming off of a 99-73 win over Finlandia last Saturday.

Maurice Jones and Dylan Langkabel lead the team with an average of 17.0 points per game while Will Bowles is scoring 12.0 points per contest.

Jones is also dishing out 6.5 assists per game to go along with 5.2 rebounds and 5.0 steals per contest.

Jermaine Myers is also scoring in double figures on a nightly basis as he is pumping in 10.7 points per outing.

Lake Superior State

The Lakers are 3-1 on the year and hav been led by Alex Williams, who is averaging 11.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game.

Devin Daly is averaging 10.3 points and 7.8 rebounds while Tony Harris is chipping in 10.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

The Lakers are scoring 70.2 points per game and have made 30 three pointers.

1,000-Point Plateau

Senior forward Jake Heagen will look to become the Oilers 43rd member of the 1,000-point club this season. Heagen has currently scored 916 points during his career at Findlay.

Controlling the Boards

The Oilers are averaging 43.5 rebounds per game this season. Sophomore center Quaran Jones leads the team with 9.0 rebounds per contest in only 14.0 minutes per game.

Filling the Stat Sheet

Senior forward Jake Heagen has been stuffing the stat sheet in the early portion of the season with averages of 14.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 blocks per game.

Feeding the Hot Hand

Sophomore forward Tyler Stern-Tucker has had the hot hand during the Oilers first two games as he his shooting 63.6 percent from the floor. He is averaging a team-high 17.5 points per game to go along with 6.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 1.0 assists and 1.0 blocks per game.

Racking up the Victories

The Oilers have been playing basketball since the 1902-03 campaign and have amassed a 1,468-866-2 (.628) record since their initial season of competition.

An Elite Program

The Oilers have the second best winning percentage in NCAA Division II competition since the year 2000, having won 357 games and lost only 80 for an overall winning percentage of .817.  During that timeframe, the Oilers reached the Elite 8 in 2005, appeared in the Sweet 16 in 2008 and won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2009 with a perfect 36-0 record.

A Tough Place to Play

The Oilers are 559-113 (.831) in Croy Gymnasium since they starting playing home games there during the 1969-70 season.  They have gone undefeated at home eight times in a season since they began play in Croy Gymnasium as well. 

In the past ten years the Oilers have posted a staggering 147-5 record at home for an incredible winning percentage of .967. During the past ten years, the Oilers have gone undefeated at home five times. They accomplished the feat 2010-11, 2009-10, 2008-09, 2007-08 and 2005-06.

Dominating GLIAC Home Games

The Oilers have won 96 of their last 98 regular season conference games at home.  They fell 57-55 to Tiffin University on Jan. 12, 2013 and lost 81-61 to Walsh University on Jan. 30, 2014.  Before that game, their last loss came in 70-68 fashion against Gannon University on February 12, 2004.
