Oilers Return to Host FSU/GVSU this Weekend

The University of Findlay men's basketball team will host Ferris State University and Grand Valley State University this weekend in GLIAC play. The Oilers will play the Bulldogs on Jan. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and then host the Lakers on Jan. 4 at 3 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium.

Center Court with Charlie Ernst

Don't forget to tune into 88.3 FM "WLFC" for Center Court with Charlie Ernst.  The radio show will be broadcast live from Fricker's on Monday evenings during the season.  The show will be aired live from 6-6:30 p.m.  Fans are encouraged to attend the show so they can listen live over the sound system and enjoy the great food Fricker's has to offer.

Series Information

The Oilers hold a 19-6 advantage in the all-time series against Ferris State dating back to the 1962-63 campaign when the Bulldogs were victorious by a score of 79-66.

Ferris State claimed an 85-81 win over Findlay last year in Big Rapids, Mich. as Matt Poches scored 19 points for the Bulldogs. Greg Kahlig led the Oilers with 21 points while Dylan Kaufman registered 15 points, four rebounds and three steals.

The Oilers hold a 16-11 advantage in the all-time series against Grand Valley State dating back to the 1997-98 campaign when the Lakers came out on top by a score of 81-76.

The Lakers claimed an 81-76 win over Findlay last year in Allendale, Mich. behind 16 points apiece from Ryan Sabin and Rob Woodson.  Greg Kahlig led the Oilers with 30 points on 9-of-18 shooting while Jake Heagen had 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Lakers were deadly in the second half, shooting 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the floor.

Findlay

The Oilers evened their record at 4-4 on the season with an 85-50 win over St. Andrews University on Dec. 19 in Croy Gymnasium.

The Oilers built a 46-19 lead at the break and then cruised through the second half en route to their second straight victory. They shot 50 percent (36-of-72) from the floor in the win and held a 44-24 advantage on the boards.  They also dished out a season-high 23 assists and came away with eight steals in the game.

Quaran Jones led the team with a career-high 15 points and 13 rebounds while John Staley was a perfect 7-of-7 from the field for 14 points.

Jake Heagen netted 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting to become the Oilers 43rd member of the 1,000-point club. His triple with 6:26 remaining in the game gave him an even 1,000 points for his career.

Elijah Kahlig also reached double digits in the win, scoring 11 points to go along with five rebounds.

Taren Sullivan had a great all-around game for Findlay off the bench with eight points, seven rebounds and five assists while Tyler Stern-Tucker produced eight points and four rebounds.

The Knights, who shot 40.8 percent (20-of-49) from the floor, were led by Titus Gary's 17 points.

Ferris State

The Bulldogs are 8-2 on the season with a 4-0 record in conference play. They are coming off of an 82-68 win over NCAA Division I foe Bowling Green State University on Dec. 21.

Ferris State is averaging 83.2 points per game on the year and have been led by Drew Lehman, who is producing 17.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.8 steals per contest.

James Chappell and Josh Fleming are also averaging in double figures at 13.5 and 11.6 points per game, respectively.

Grand Valley State

The Lakers are 6-4 on the year with a 2-2 record in GLIAC play.  Ricardo Carbajal leads the team with averages of 14.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while Ryan Sabin is scoring 13.1 points per outing.

Luke Ryskamp is giving the Lakers 9.0 points per contest while Trevin Alexander is averaging 7.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per game off the bench.

1,000-Point Plateau

Senior forward Jake Heagen became the Oilers 43rd member of the 1,000-point club with 14 points in the Oilers 85-50 win over St. Andrews on Dec. 19. Heagen has now scored 1,000 points in his career and is chasing Garry Merrill for 42nd place on the all-time scoring list at Findlay. Merrill recorded 1,022 career points from 1965-68.

Junior guard Dylan Kaufman is shooting 48.9 percent from three point range this season, the sixth best mark in the GLIAC. He is also connecting on 2.8 three pointers per contest, the fourth best mark in the conference.

A Tough Place to Play

The Oilers are 562-114 (.831) in Croy Gymnasium since they starting playing home games there during the 1969-70 season.  They have gone undefeated at home eight times in a season since they began play in Croy Gymnasium as well. 

In the past ten years the Oilers have posted a staggering 149-6 record at home for an incredible winning percentage of .961. During the past ten years, the Oilers have gone undefeated at home five times. They accomplished the feat 2010-11, 2009-10, 2008-09, 2007-08 and 2005-06.

Dominating GLIAC Home Games

The Oilers have won 97 of their last 100 regular season conference games at home.  Their last home loss came against Lake Superior State on Dec. 6, 2014 when they fell 70-62.
