MBB to Host ODU, Travel to Tiffin

The Oilers will host Ohio Dominican on Thursday before hitting the road to take on Tiffin this Saturday. The Oilers and Panthers are scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Oilers and Dragons will tip at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Center Court with Charlie Ernst

Don't forget to tune into 88.3 FM "WLFC" for Center Court with Charlie Ernst.  The radio show will be broadcast live from Fricker's on Monday evenings during the season.  The show will be aired live from 6-6:30 p.m.  Fans are encouraged to attend the show so they can listen live over the sound system and enjoy the great food Fricker's has to offer.

Series Information

The Oilers have posted a 26-7 advantage in the all-time series against Ohio Dominican dating back to the 1969-70 campaign when they were victorious by a score of 87-69.

The Panthers claimed a 55-52 win over the Oilers earlier this season in Columbus. The Oilers had trouble putting the ball in the basket as they hit only 32.2 percent (19-of-59) of their shot attempts, which included a 4-of-21 (19%) showing from three point range. The Panthers meanwhile converted 42.2 percent (19-of-45) of their field goal attempts and swished 8-of-19 (42.1%) shots from long range.

Nick Ruthsatz came off the bench to lead the Oilers in scoring with 13 points while Jake Heagen recorded a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds.

John Staley nearly recorded a double-double with eight points to go along with a career-high ten boards. Elijah Kahlig recorded seven points and six rebounds while Taren Sullivan chipped in seven points off the bench.

The Oilers hold a commanding 41-8 advantage in the all-time series against the Dragons dating back to the 1926-27 campaign when Tiffin won 22-21.

The Oilers cruised to an 85-54 win over the Dragons earlier this season in Croy Gymnasium. The Oilers jumped out to a 42-13 lead at the break and never looked back. They shot 55.6 percent (30-of-54) from the floor and canned a season-high 13-of-25 (52%) of their three point tries in the game.

Elijah Kahlig led the way with a career-high 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting. He also connected on a career-high 6-of-8 attempts from behind the three point line and added four rebounds in the win.

Jake Heagen recorded 16 points, five rebounds and three steals while Dylan Kaufman came up with 16 points off the bench for Findlay.

The Oilers two-headed point guard attack of Ricardo Smith and Nick Ruthsatz only combined for seven points, but together they dished out 15 assists. Ruthsatz registered a career-high eight assists to go along with five points and five rebounds while Smith had seven assists to go along with five rebounds and two points.

Findlay

The Oilers scratched and clawed their way to a 71-67 overtime win over Wayne State University on Monday in Detroit, Mich. to give them a 10-9 record on the season.

Elijah Kahlig started the extra session by converting a layup before Ricardo Smith hit two free throws to put Findlay up 61-57 with 2:07 remaining. After a score by the Warriors, Jake Heagen and Tyler Stern-Tucker made back-to-back jumpers to give the Oilers a 65-60 lead with only 40 seconds remaining.

Leading by five, the Oilers fouled and Wayne State made a pair of shots from the charity stripe. Kahlig then made two from the line to push the lead back to five before the Warriors cut the lead to three at 67-64 with seven seconds remaining. Heagen then went to the line and made two free throws, but the Warriors hit a three pointer to make the score 69-67 with little time remaining on the clock. Dylan Kaufman then made two free throws with under a second remaining for the final margin of the game.

The Oilers, who only shot 35.6 percent (21-of-59) from the floor, were led by Kaufman's 22 points. He hit 7-of-16 shot attempts and drained 6-of-12 tries from three point range. The Berlin, Ohio native also added five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and one steals in the win.

Heagen contributed 17 points and five rebounds while Kahlig had ten points and five boards.

The Panthers are 6-13 on the season with a 4-10 record in conference play. Trent Weaver leads the team and sports averages of 14.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

Chad Nelson is giving them 12.5 points and 2.8 assists per game while Ronnie Williams is averaging 7.7 points per outing.

The Dragons are 7-14 on the season with a 3-11 record in GLIAC play. Khaleal McCormick is averaging a team-high 16.2 points per game.

Ashton Khan is stuffing the stat sheet with averages of 11.8 points, 4.0 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game while Alex Brown is averaging 10.0 points per outing.

1,000-Point Plateau

Senior forward Jake Heagen became the Oilers 43rd member of the 1,000-point club with 14 points in the Oilers 85-50 win over St. Andrews on Dec. 19. Heagen has now scored 1,158 points in his career and is chasing Ron Marquette for 36th place on the all-time scoring list at Findlay. Marquette recorded 1,162 career points from 1952-55.

Making Shots

Junior forward John Staley is leading the GLIAC in field goal shooting percentage as he is connecting on 66.0 percent of his attempts this year. As a team, the Oilers are ranked seventh in the conference with a 45.1 percent shooting clip.

Stroking 3's

The Oilers are hitting 36.8 percent of their three point tires this season, the second best mark in the conference. Individually, freshman guard Elijah Kahlig is ranked 13th in the conference with a 41.9 percent shooting clip from long range.  Junior guard Dylan Kaufman also shows up among the league leaders and is ranked 17th with a 40.2 percent shooting clip from behind the three point line.

A Tough Place to Play

The Oilers are 565-115 (.830) in Croy Gymnasium since they starting playing home games there during the 1969-70 season.  They have gone undefeated at home eight times in a season since they began play in Croy Gymnasium as well. 

In the past ten years the Oilers have posted a staggering 153-7 record at home for an incredible winning percentage of .956. During the past ten years, the Oilers have gone undefeated at home five times. They accomplished the feat 2010-11, 2009-10, 2008-09, 2007-08 and 2005-06.

Dominating GLIAC Home Games

The Oilers have won 100 of their last 104 regular season conference games at home.  Their last home loss in a GLIAC game came against Ferris State on Jan. 2, 2015 when they fell 79-73.
