Oilers Claim a Share of GLIAC South w/ Win over WSU
The University of Findlay men's basketball clinched a share of their third straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division title with an 86-70 win over Wayne State University on Feb. 26 in Croy Gymnasium.
The Oilers, who have now won 12 South Division titles in the past 14 years and a league-high 13 overall, opened up a 49-28 lead on the Warriors in the first half and cruised through the second half to earn the 5-seed in the 2015 GLIAC Tournament. They shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the floor and made 27-of-35 (77.1%) from the free throw line in the victory.
Senior forward Jake Heagen paced the Oilers on senior day with 22 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. He made 6-of-11 shot attempts from the field and canned 8-of-9 attempts from the charity stripe.
Sophomore guard Ricardo Smith stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists while junior forward John Staley had ten points and six boards.
Freshman guard Elijah Kahlig also reached double figures with ten points and junior guard Dylan Kaufman had nine.
Freshman forward Taren Sullivan provided seven points, two rebounds and two assists off the bench while sophomore forward Tyler Stern-Tucker had six points and four rebounds too.
The Warriors were led by Michael Lewis, who scored 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and three steals.
The Oilers will now prepare to battle Saginaw Valley State University in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament. The game is scheduled to be played on March 4 in University Center, Mich.
