Oilers Outlast Cardinals, Win 75-70

The University of Findlay men's basketball team earned a 75-70 win over Saginaw Valley State University on Jan. 7 in Croy Gymnasium. The victory pushes the Oilers record to 7-5 on the season with a 4-3 mark in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

In a game that featured nine ties and 11 lead changes, the Oilers shot 51.8 percent (29-of-56) from the field and canned 7-of-15 (46.7%) shot attempts from behind the three point line. They also forced 16 turnovers, blocked a season-high eight shots and held a 38-26 advantage in points in the paint.

The Cardinals, who are now 9-3 on the year with a 6-1 record in GLIAC play, shot 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the floor in the game. They made 9-of-18 (50%) attempts from three point range and also held a slight 33-32 advantage on the boards.

Sophomore guard Martyce Kimbrough paced the Oilers with 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting.

Senior forward John Staley had 12 points and four rebounds, shooting a perfect 5-of-5 from the field, and junior forward Tyler Stern-Tucker came off the pine to contribute 12 points and seven boards.

Sophomore forward Taren Sullivan chipped in nine points, five assists and two rebounds while junior guard Ricardo Smith had seven points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Freshman forward Alex White only scored two points in the victory, but blocked a career-high six shots.

The Cardinals were led by Garrett Hall, who scored a game-high 15 points.

The Oilers will be back at home on Saturday when they battle Hillsdale College at 3 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium.
