Oilers Host #23 Ashland/Lake Erie in Croy

The Oilers are back at it again this week with home games against 23rd-ranked Ashland University and Lake Erie College. The Oilers and Eagles will battle at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 21 in Croy Gymnasium. The Oilers and Storm will then play a 3 p.m. contest on Jan. 23.

Series Information

The Oilers hold a 62-28 advantage in the all-time series against Ashland dating back to the 1910-11 campaign when Findlay won 35-10.

The two programs split their season series last season with each team winning on their home floor. The Eagles scored an 80-47 win in Ashland while the Oilers claimed an 89-78 win in Findlay.

In the road loss, the Oilers made only 15 field goals in the game, hitting 31.9 percent (15-of-47) of their shot attempts. They converted a mere 3-of-20 (15%) three point tries and were out-rebounded by a 42-27 margin.

Dylan Kaufman scored a game-high 21 points for the Oilers, hitting 7-of-9 field goal attempts. Kaufman made nearly half of Findlay's field goals in the game and accounted for all three made three pointers.

In the home win, Findlay shot 55.6 percent (30-of-54) from the floor and canned 10-of-19 (52.6%) attempts from behind the three point line.

Jake Heagen led the way with 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Tyler Stern-Tucker came off the bench to provide 15 points and five rebounds while Dylan Kaufman had 13 points, five rebounds and three assists.

The Oilers hold an 18-1 advantage in the all-time series against Lake Erie dating back to the 1988-89 campaign when Findlay was victorious by a score of 84-51.

The two programs split their season series last year with each team claiming a win on the road. Findlay defeated the Storm by a score of 62-53 at Lake Erie and lost 70-60 at home.

In their road win, the Oilers shot 47.8 percent (22-of-46) from the floor, but hit only 5-of-20 (25%) attempts from three point range.

Jake Heagen led the way with 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals while junior forward John Staley recorded 12 points and four boards.

In their loss at home, the Oilers shot 40.4 percent (21-of-52) from the floor, which included a 7-of-25 (28%) showing from three point range. The Storm meanwhile connected on 52.8 percent (28-of-53) of their shot attempts and canned 11-of-22 (50%) tries from long range.

John Staley paced the Oilers with 11 points and nine rebounds while Jake Heagen had ten points and four assists.

Findlay

The Oilers are 10-5 on the season with a 7-3 record in conference play.  They are coming off of a 70-60 win at Tiffin last Saturday and have won five straight games, the longest streak in the GLIAC.

Sophomore guard Martyce Kimbrough has paced the squad this season and is averaging a team-best 14.5 points per game. The Lima, Ohio native ranks fourth in the GLIAC with 38 made three pointers and leads the conference with a 91.3 percent shooting clip from the free throw line.

Senior John Staley is leading the GLIAC in shooting percentage at 73.6 percent and is also scoring 10.7 points per contest. Sophomore forward Taren Sullivan is also averaging in double figures at 10.8 points per outing. He is chipping in 4.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game as well.

#23 Ashland

The Eagles are 13-3 on the season with a 7-3 record in conference play. They are currently ranked 23rd in the nation and are coming off of a 69-67 win at Malone last Saturday.

Junior Wendell Davis has paced the team thus far with averages of 19.9 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. He is shooting 53.8 percent from the field and 45.0 percent from behind the three point line.

Sophomore Marsalis Hamilton is scoring 13.3 points per contest while junior Boo Osborne is giving the Eagles 11.3 points per game.

Lake Erie

The Storm are 7-9 on the season with a 4-6 record in GLIAC play. They are coming off of an 83-60 loss at Walsh last Saturday.

Senior Andy Bosley is averaging 15.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game to lead the squad while senior Trey Howard is scoring 12.4 points per outing as well.

Juniors Sean Howard and Michael Morris are also averaging in double figures at 10.9 and 10.7 points per game, respectively.

Automatic From the Line

Sophomore guard Martyce Kimbrough is hitting 91.3 percent (42-of-46) of his attempts from the free throw line this year. His shooting percentage from the charity stripe is the best in the GLIAC and the 11th best mark in the nation.

Magic Touch

Senior forward John Staley is hitting 73.6 percent (67-of-91) of his field goal attempts this season. Staley's shooting percentage is the best mark in the GLIAC this year. The shooting perentage is also the top mark in the nation.

In his last eight games, Staley has shot 82.6 percent (38-of-46) from the floor. He has also made 22 out of his last 26 shot attempts from the floor.

Staley set a single season school record last season by converting 64.1 percent (107-of-167) of his shot attempts.

Dominating GLIAC Home Games

The Oilers have won 109 of their last 114 regular season conference games at home.  From 2004-13, the Oilers won 84-straight GLIAC games in Croy Gymnasium.
