Kimbrough Wins it at the Buzzer
Junior guard Martyce Kimbrough drilled a long three pointer at the buzzer in overtime to give the Oilers men's basketball team an 88-85 win at Walsh on Feb. 23 in Canton, Mich. The victory gives the Oilers, who are ranked 22nd in the nation, a 22-5 record on the year with a 16-4 record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
The Oilers fell behind by a score of 77-69 with 3:45 to go in regulation, but closed the second half on an eight point run to tie the game and force overtime. The Oilers then found themselves up 85-82 with 12 ticks left in overtime before Zac Carter buried a three pointer for Walsh with only six seconds left. The Oilers then raced the ball down the floor and Kimbrough connected on a triple at the buzzer to give Findlay the win.
Kimbrough paced the Oilers with 28 points on 12-of-23 shooting. He also became the 45th player in UF history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau at Findlay with his game-winning triple and now has 1,001 career points in only 55 games at UF.
Junior forward Taren Sullivan turned in a double-double with 23 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. He shot 10-of-18 from the floor and also added a steal and a block in the victory.
Senior forward Tyler Stern-Tucker had 15 points and six rebounds while junior guard Elijah Kahlig had ten points, three rebounds and two assists.
Red-shirt freshman forward Aaron Overhiser was huge off the bench with eight points and six rebounds as well.
As a team, the Oilers shot 50 percent (35-of-70) from the floor and forced 12 turnovers. The Cavaliers, who were led by Trey Fletcher's game-high 34 points, connected on 45.1 percent (32-of-71) of their field goal attempts and splashed 41.9 percent (13-of-31) of their three point tries.
The Oilers will now prepare to host the first round of the 2017 GLIAC Tournament on Feb. 28 against Grand Valley State at 7 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium.
Tickets for the Oilers first round tournament game will be on sale Friday, Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the UF athletic office located on the second floor of the Koehler Fitness and Recreation Complex.
