McGeean Shatters Records, Oilers Win

The University of Findlay men's golf team won their second event of the season, capturing first place at the Arendsen Invitational on Sunday, September 26 at the Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Michigan. The Oilers shot a 298 in the opening round and came back with a 287 in the second, the third lowest 18-hole score in team history, for a 585 to edge Grand Valley State University by three strokes.

Senior Joe McGeean led the way as he captured first place at the event with a six-under par score of 138, a new school record for lowest 36 holes.

McGeean shot a 73 in the opening round and then shattered the record books with a seven-under par score of 65 in the second.

The 65 is two shots lower than the school record of 67, which was done by Kyle Weisenburger, Eric Atsma and junior Michael Schmitmeyer, who accomplished the feat twice.

McGeean's total of 138 ties his own school record of 138, which he set at Northern Michigan University in 2008, but his six-under par score is two strokes better than his performance at NMU.

Schmitmeyer also played well for Findlay, tying for third with a 144 (72, 72) while Jeff Mocini tied for ninth with a 149 (76, 73).

Logan Cooke (77, 77 – 154), Matt Jones (82, 76 – 158), Marcus Hunt (80, 80 – 160) and Kyle Nickson (79, 83 – 162) also competed for Findlay at the event.
