Oilers Lead After 36 Holes at G-MAC Championship
Liberty Township, Ohio – Six days after the women's golf team secured a league title, the University of Findlay men's golf team finds itself atop the standings at the 2018 Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Championship at the Four Bridges Country Club. Teams played 36 holes on Monday, April 23 and will wrap up the event with 18 holes on Tuesday. The Oilers shot a 290 in the first 18 holes and carded a 305 in the second 18 for a 36-hole total of 595, five shots ahead of second place Trevecca Nazarene, the favorite coming into the event. The opening round of 290 set a new G-MAC Championship 18-hole record.
Findlay, which is playing to prove they belong in the 2018 DII Midwest Regional, was led by the play of junior Dylan DeWitt who put up a 73 (+1) in both Monday rounds for a 36-hole score of 146, good enough for a tie for first. In DeWitt's opening round, he shot a 38 on the front but made eight pars and a birdie on the back nine to round out his one-over, 73. His second round featured a variety of scores as the junior would make six birdies, six pars, five bogeys, and one double en route to his second 73 of the day.
In a tie for fourth are senior Justin Roth and sophomore Luke Kelly who each sit at 149 (+5) through 36 holes. Roth's first round was the better of the two as he used four birdies to shoot a 71 (-1). His second set of 18 was a little tougher, but the senior still managed 12 pars and a birdie for a 78 (+6).
Kelly came out of the gate with solid play, making par on his first six holes and eight of the first nine. After a bogey on the tenth, the Oilers' underclassman made eagle on the par 5, 11th. Another birdie and three pars on the remaining seven holes led Kelly to an opening-round 74 (+2). He followed that effort up with a 75 (+3) in which he made 11 pars and two birdies.
Senior Cam Wardley is currently in a tie for 15th after posting a 152 (+8) in through 36 holes of action. Wardley opened with one of the top-ten scores of the day when he made a 73 (+1) in his first 18 hole set. He came back with a 79 (+7) in his second round, a round in which the senior made four birdies, six pars, five bogeys, and three doubles.
Rounding out the scoring for Findlay is sophomore Cameron Bruce who shot a 153 (+9) on the day and is currently in a tie for 18th. Bruce also had one of the best rounds of the day when he carded four birdies in his opening 18 holes to shoot a 73 (+1). In the second round, the Pickerington, Ohio native battled through four double-bogeys, grinding to an 80 (+8) in the rainy second round.
Findlay will look to win its first conference title since 2007 tomorrow as the play the final 18 holes at the G-MAC Championship.
