Oilers Win at Home vs #23 Mercyhurst

Findlay, Ohio- The University of Findlay men's soccer team went up against #23 Mercyhurst University on Saturday, September 28. The Oilers defended home turf by defeating the Lakers by a final score of 4-1. Findlay now is 5-2 on the season after their victory while the Lakers fall to 2-2-1. The win marks Findlay's second win over a top-25 team this season.

The scoring began with senior Josh Dickinson in the 30th minute when he bent it around two defenders and in the corner of the goal. The half would see the only score from the goal by Dickinson.

The second half, Mercyhurst came out firing, pressuring the Oilers near the goal for multiple shots. Off a corner kick, a header by Zach Martin tied the contest up 1-1 in the 66th minute. Within just over a minute passing, the Oilers struck again.

In the 67th minute, junior Josh Hales got past the goalie for a tap in goal to push the Oilers ahead 2-1. Hales was not done just yet, and in the 71st minute struck again with his second goal of the game from an assist by freshman David Hug.

The final goal for the Oilers came from junior Alex Kerstetter after yet another assist from Hug in the 78th minute. Hug ended the day with a game high two assists.

Although the Oilers were outshot 13-11 by the Lakers, the Oilers were able to make the most of their opportunities with their 4 goals on the evening. Seven different Oilers contributed a shot in the contest including 4 by Dickinson and 2 by Hales.

Freshman goalie Andrew Boulton had a total of 6 saves as well and received the win.

The Oilers are slated to play next against conference competitor Kentucky Wesleyan at DeHaven Field on Thursday, October 3. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
