Vicars to Compete in World University Games in Russia

Derrick Vicars will compete in the World University Games in both the shot put and discus on July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia.  A former standout track athlete for the Oilers, Vicars will be coached by South Carolina's Curtis Frye as he represents Team USA at the event.

Only ten men and ten women were selected to compete for Team USA.  To participate in the World University Games an individual must have been born between Jan. 1, 1985 and Dec. 31, 1995.  The athletes must have also taken at least one three-credit hour course towards a degree or diploma within the last year and met the qualifying standards found here.

Vicars ended his career at Findlay as one of the most decorated student-athletes in school history.  The Genoa, Ohio native was a two-time national champion, winning gold in the shot put (2012) and discus (2010) during the outdoor seasons for Findlay.  A 10-time All-American, Vicars was named the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year in 2012 and 2013.  He also earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Field Athlete of the Year honors three times during his career (2012 indoor, 2012 outdoor, 2013 outdoor) and ended his career with the Oilers as the school record holder in five events.
