Welch Dominates as Oilers Wrap Up Raleigh Relays
The University of Findlay men's and women's track and field teams competed on Day 2 of the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, NC on Saturday, March 29th hosted by North Carolina State University.
For the Oilers, the meet was highlighted by junior Justin Welch. Fresh off his indoor national championship in the weight throw, he won the first event of the outdoor season, taking first place with his toss of 230'01. This throw met the automatic qualifying standard set by the NCAA, set a new school record, was a automatic qualifier for USA Track and Field Nationals, and is the fourth furthest throw across all divisions of the NCAA. Senior Marcus Vicars had a solid performance as well as his best throw measured 178'05, a distance that met the NCAA provisional mark. That toss earned 12th place in the event.
In the men's 800 meter run, junior Dillon Webster met the NCAA provisional mark and was only four one-hundredths of a second shy of a new school record with his run of 1:50.37 earning him third place in the event.
Junior Kendra Averesch continued her success at the meet as she grabbed third place in her flight and 11th overall in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 158'03. Close behind was freshman Erica King. She earned fourth place in the same flight and 13th overall with her throw that distanced 157'00.
In the women's 400 meter hurdles, sophomore Maud Sanmiquel earned a 12th place finish with her time of 1:01.84. The field contained 58 athletes.
Senior Samantha Hassen competed in the 10,000 meter run and earned 15th of over 40 athletes with her time of 39:03.21
Findlay will be back on the track next weekend, April 4 and 5, as they travel to Louisville, KY for the Bellarmine Invitational.
