Oilers Split Doubleheader Against Northwood University

Midland, MI – The University of Findlay softball traveled to Midland, Michigan to face Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponent Northwood University in doubleheader, which took place on Saturday, April 11.  The Oilers won the first game 4-3 and then lost the second game 7-5 which went to eight innings.  The doubleheader split gives the Oilers a 16-12-1 record on the season.

In the first game, Chelsea McManaway claimed her ninth victory for the season on the mound by striking out eight batters in seven innings.

The Oilers were down 3-2 heading to the top of the seventh inning.  The Oilers rallied to take a one run lead when Emily Stewart got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Hayley Apple touched home to give the Oilers the lead.  McManaway took care of business on the mound in the final inning striking out the final two batters to give the Oilers the 4-3 victory.

Katie Dunphy had a big game at the plate for the Oilers finishing with two doubles and two runs batted in.

Morgan Arnold added a single and one run scored while Abby Funk finished with two singles.

In the second game, Jenna Inman started the game on the mound for the Oilers and gave up nine hits, five runs and struck out two batters in 6.2 innings.  Bonnie Zappitelli took over on the mound got the loss for the Oilers by giving up two hits and two earned runs in one inning.

The game was tied 3-3 as it headed to extra innings.  Then, in the top of the eighth the Timberwolves scored four runs to take a commanding 7-3 lead.  The Oilers backs were against the wall as they faced a four run deficit in their 3 final outs.  With two outs on the board Kelley Cejer blasted a two-run home run to cut the Timberwolves lead to two and the Oilers had good reason to wear their rally caps.  Unfortunately, the rally was short lived as a groundball to second base ended the inning and game for the Oilers as the Timberwolves claimed a 7-5 victory.

Megan Turner had a big game at the dish for the Oilers as she finished the game with a two-run dinger while Katie Dunphy also had a big game at the plate blasting a solo shot for the Oilers.

Lauren Trumpler finished the game with a single while Abby Funk added a single and scored a run.

The Oilers return to the field on Sunday, April 12 as they face GLIAC rival Lake Superior State University in a doubleheader taking place at Anderson Field.  The first game is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m.
