Findlay Advances to 5-5 on the Season

The University of Findlay softball team split their double-header on Wednesday, March 2nd as they dropped the first game against Missouri-St. Louis 9-0 and defeated University of Mary 3-0 to stand at 5-5 on the season.

Game 1 (Box Score)

In the first game, the offense struggled to get going as they failed to record a hit. Missouri-St. Louis took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

In the bottom of the first, senior Brooke Scherger and sophomore Hayley Apple walked to get on base, but they were unable to advance.

Missouri St. Louis would add one run in each of the second, third and fourth innings.  After a scoreless fifth inning, they would tack on five runs to make the final score 9-0.

Freshman Hailey Bryan took the loss on the mound as she pitched three innings, giving up three runs, two walks and had three strikeouts.

Game 2 (Box Score)

The tables turned in the second game as the Oilers' bats came alive to crank out nine hits and held University of Mary to just four hits.

Findlay started the bottom of the first inning with a single from Scherger.  She later would steal second and sophomore Cassidy Ghesquiere would walk to have runners on first and second.  A single from freshman Rebecca Harvey would advance each runner.  Scherger would eventually score on a fielder's choice and a pop out would end the inning with the Oilers up 1-0.

The offense failed to get anything going in the second and third innings, but junior Katie Dunphy led off the bottom of the fourth with a double.  With two outs, sophomore Meredith Shepherd singled to right field to score Dunphy to extend the lead to 2-0 at the end of the fourth.

After a scoreless fifth inning, junior Lauren Trumpler began the bottom of the sixth with a single.  Sophomore Kelley Cejer would add a single of her own and advance the runner.  Dunphy continued the trend and added a RBI single before the inning would end to give the Oilers a 3-0 lead that would end up being the final score.

Sophomore Chelsea McManaway picked up the win on the mound as she went the distance giving up four hits, with three walks, no runs and five strikeouts.

Harvey finished the second game 2-for-3 and Dunphy ended up going 2-for-3 also, with a double.
