Oilers Earn Split at Tiffin
After a weekend of a wintry cold mix, The University of Findlay softball team finally got back on the field on Wednesday, April 13th for a double header against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Tiffin University. The Oilers came away with a 4-1 victory in game one, but the Dragons got revenge as they shut out Findlay in game two 2-0. The split moves Findlay to 25-11 on the season and 11-3 in GLIAC play.
Game 1 (Box Score)
In the first contest, the Oilers jumped out to an early first inning lead and never looked back.
After the first two batters were retired, freshman Rebecca Harvey doubled and junior Lauren Trumpler walked. Sophomore Kelley Cejer cleared the bases with a three run home run to take a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Dragons cut the lead with an RBI single to trail Findlay 3-1.
An RBI single from freshman Carleigh Cousino in the sixth inning put the game out of reach, as Findlay won the first game 4-1.
Findlay recorded only four hits in the game, while Tiffin registered five hits. The Oilers were led by Cejer who finished the game 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs.
Freshman Hailey Bryan (11-5) had another stellar performance on the mound for Findlay as she picked up the first game victory. She pitched four innings giving up one run on four hits. Junior Jenna Inman picked up her first save of the season after pitching the final three innings giving up just one hit and striking out one.
Game 2 (Box Score)
Dominant pitching continued in game two, as hits were hard to come by. Each team only came up with five hits a piece.
Senior Brooke Scherger singled in the first, Trumpler singled in the second, Harvey singled in the third, and Cejer added a single in the fourth.
The Dragons two runs came in the fifth inning on a two RBI single with two outs.
A late seventh inning rally by the Oilers came up short. After a groundout, junior Kelsey Borders reached on a walk. Cousino singled and a groundout advanced the runners to second and third. A deep fly ball to left field would end the game 2-0 in favor of the Dragons.
Sophomore Chelsea McManaway (13-3) took the tough loss on the mound. She pitched four innings giving up one run on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
The University of Findlay softball team continues GLIAC play on Thursday, April 14th as they travel to Grand Valley State University for a double header. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3:30pm.
