Oilers Win First Game in GLIAC Tournament

The University of Findlay softball team took on Grand Valley State University on Friday, April 29th in the first round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Softball Tournament at the Marathon Diamonds in Findlay, Ohio.  The Oilers started off the tournament on the right foot with a 5-0 shutout victory.  The win puts the Oilers at 30-19 on the season.  This is the first time they have reached the 30 win plateau since 1987.

Findlay got on the board in the third inning thanks to a two RBI single by junior Lauren Trumpler to take a 2-0 lead.  Senior Brooke Scherger walked and junior Katie Dunphy was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

The Oilers scored two more runs in the sixth inning.  Sophomore Kelley Cejer singled to start the inning.  With two outs, sophomore Amanda Delmonte doubled to score Cejer and freshman Hayley Apple followed up with a RBI single to extend the lead to 4-0.

The final run of the game came on a solo homerun by Scherger, her first of the season, to put the final score to 5-0.

On the mound, sophomore Chelsea McManaway (16-6) picked up the victory.  She pitched three and two thirds innings, giving up no runs, two hits, one walk, while striking out two.

At the plate, Findlay was led by Scherger (2-for-3, triple and homerun) and Cejer (2-for-3).

The Oilers continue play in the GLIAC Softball Tournament later today at 4pm against Saginaw Valley State University, who won their first matchup 3-0 against Hillsdale College.
