Oilers Make History With Day 1 Sweep

Box Score

Findlay, OH – The University of Findlay softball team defeated Saginaw Valley State University 4-2 in the second round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament on Friday, April 29. The win marks the first time in school history that the Oilers have gone 2-0 on the first day of the conference tournament. Findlay now boasts a record of 31-19.

Saginaw Valley State got on the board first with a pair of runs in the second inning off of Oilers pitcher Hailey Bryan, who started both games on the day. The scored remained 2-0 until the fourth inning.

Amanda Delmonte hit a two out double and was pinch run for by Karla Maul. The Oilers got a bit of good fortune when Kesley Borders hit an infield single and the Cardinals' second basemen, in an attempt to get Borders out, threw the ball over the head of the first basemen and allowed Maul to score.

More errors in the fifth inning would prove costly for Saginaw as the Oilers scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth with the help of four Cardinals errors.

Once the Orange and Black took the lead in the fifth, they turned to their GLIAC Pitcher of the Year, Chelsea McManaway for the save and she delivered. The Oilers' sophomore picked up her fifth save of the year as she tossed four and two-thirds innings and struck out seven hitters while allowing just one hit.

The winning pitcher was Jenna Inman who was pitching in the fifth when the Oilers took the lead. Her record improves to 3-4 on the season.

The bottom of the Oilers order played a big role in this game as the seven, eight, and nine hitters combined for three of the team's four runs.

Findlay finished with four runs on five hits, made no errors, and left seven runners on base.

Saginaw Valley managed two runs on six hits and made six errors.

The Oilers will play tomorrow morning at 10:00 am against the top-seeded Wayne State University Warriors. For all information regarding the tournament, including live stat links and live video links, log onto the tournament page at: http://www.gliac.org/sports/sball/2015-16/releases/tournament/2016
