Oilers Split with Ferris State

The University of Findlay softball team traveled to Big Rapids, Mich. for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader with Ferris State University on Sunday, April 9. The Oilers fell in the first game, but took the second game to move to 17-16 on the season and 7-5 in conference play.

Game 1 L 5-0 Box Score

A tough game at the plate led to a 5-0 Bulldogs victory in the first game of the day. Ferris State held Findlay to just one hit in the game, while the Bulldogs ended the game with eight hits. The Oilers also committed three errors while Ferris State had one miscue.

Ferris State's Sarah Meredith connected on a grand slam in the third inning for 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the fifth inning on a RBI double for a 5-0 final score.

The lone hit for Findlay came on a single in the fifth inning by sophomore Breanna Cleland.

Senior Jenna Inman (5-6) took the loss for the Oilers. She pitched two innings and gave up three runs on four hits with one strikeout. Sophomore Morgan James came in to pitch the remaining four innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits with one strikeout.

Game 2 W 9-4 Box Score

Findlay exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to come away with a victory in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Oilers got on the scoreboard first on a RBI by junior Hayley Apple to score junior Destinie Keeton, who singled earlier in the inning. Ferris State tied the game at 1-apiece in the top of the second on a RBI single. The Bulldogs went ahead 3-1 in the third inning on a two run double, but the lead was short lived as Findlay responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third.

Junior Kelley Cejer walked and Keeton followed up with a double to put runners in scoring position. Apple smacked a single to center field to score Cejer and Keeton would cross the plate on a passed ball for a 3-3 tie.

In the top of the sixth Ferris State added a run on a single to take a 4-3 lead, but the Oilers regained the lead in bottom of the sixth with six runs on five hits.

Junior Amanda Delmonte led off with a triple and she scored on a single by junior Meredith Shepherd. An error allowed Shepherd to score and after a single by Cejer, senior Lauren Trumpler brought two more runners home with a double to center field for a 7-4 lead. A passed ball advanced Trumpler to third and she eventually stole home for another Findlay run. The final run of the inning came on a RBI single by sophomore Salwa Al-Hajabed for a 9-4 final score.

Sophomore Hailey Bryan (10-7) earned the victory in the circle for Findlay. She pitched a complete game giving up four runs on ten hits with four strikeouts.

The Oilers recorded nine hits in the game and were led by Keeton, who finished 3-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored.

The Oilers return to the playing field on Friday, April 14 for another GLIAC doubleheader at Ashland University. The first game is game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
