Findlay Drops League Double-Header at ODU
Columbus, Ohio - The University of Findlay softball team traveled to Columbus to take on the Ohio Dominican Panthers in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) double-header on Wednesday, March 20. The Oilers dropped both contests to fall to 10-12 on the year and 2-2 in league play while the Panthers reach the .500 mark at 13-13 overall and improve to a perfect 4-0 in the G-MAC.
Game 1 Box Score (L 5-2)
The first two and a half innings of action saw just two players reach base between both teams, one on an error and the other on a hit-by-pitch.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Panthers got the game's first hit, an infield single. ODU would plate two runs in the inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Findlay cut into that lead in the top of the fourth. Rebecca Harvey laced a one-out base hit to left field and was followed by a double to right center off the bat of Devyn Zuro, scoring Harvey.
The Panthers took command of the game in the fifth, scoring three runs on three hits and taking advantage of a Findlay error.
A double in the sixth by Harvey plated Amanda Delmonte, who led off the inning with a walk, but that was all the offense the Oilers would muster as the Orange and Black went 1-2-3 in the seventh to take a three-run defeat.
Findlay scored two runs on three hits and made three errors while the Panthers had five runs on seven hits and made just one error.
Rebecca Harvey finished the game with two hits, a run scored, and an RBI while Devyn Zuro had one hit, a double, and one RBI.
Hailey Bryan took the loss in the circle to fall to 6-5 this season. She tossed 5.1 innings and allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits. She struck out seven batters and did not allow a walk.
Game 2 Box Score (L 9-4)
Devyn Zuro picked up her second extra-base hit of the day in the top of the first inning. With two outs and a runner on, Zuro blasted a ball over the fence in left field to give Findlay a 2-0 lead. It was the first home run of Zuro's young career.
The Panthers rallied in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of home runs of their own, one of which was a two-run blast, and took the lead back from the Oilers at 3-2.
After ODU added a run in the third via another home run, Zuro again picked up an extra base hit, roping a double down the left field line to plate Emily Barr, pinch runner for Amanda Delmonte who singled with one out. After a walk, Sadie Gearhart hit a triple to left field which scored another run and tied the game at 4-4.
Another big inning for the Panthers gave the home team control. In the bottom of the fourth, Ohio Dominican scored five runs on four hits to take a 9-4 lead, the eventual final score. Findlay did not have a runner reach base for the remainder of the game.
Findlay scored four runs on 11 hits and made one error while ODU scored their nine runs on eight hits.
Amanda Delmonte and Sadie Gearhart each had three hits in the game while Devyn Zuro had two hits, a run scored, and had a game-high three runs-batted-in.
Carly Brandon got the start in the game and threw 2.0 innings and allowed four runs on four hits. She struck out three and walked one.
Lyndsey Seamon took the loss for Findlay as she threw one inning and allowed one run, the first run in the fifth inning.
The Oilers are back in action on Saturday, Mach 23 when they travel to take on Cedarville in a double-header starting at 12:00 pm.
