Oilers' Men and Women Earn Victories Over Tiffin
Tiffin, OH – The University of Findlay swimming and diving team traveled to Tiffin University to take on the Dragons on Friday, Jan. 20. Both Oilers' squads came away with wins after the 64 combined events were completed. The men defeated the Dragons by a score of 73.5 to 61.5 while the women won comfortably with an 88 to 47 final.
Men's Top Finishers
The 400 yard medley relay team of sophomore Trae Gulgin, senior Todo Djurovic, freshman Tucker Stocker, and senior Nick Kaftan got the men off to a good start as they took first place with a time of 3:37.03, 15 seconds faster than the squad from Tiffin.
Findlay received a first and second place finish in the 1000 yard freestyle as sophomore Alex Matthews and freshman Gerard Niermann cruised out to the front of the pack. At race's end, Matthews secured first with a 10:17.81 while Niermann touched after a 10:19.99. The next competitor would not cross until 47 seconds later.
The next winner in for the Oilers' was freshman Nathan Ladetto in the 500 yard freestyle. He was the only competitor in the race that did not swim any of his ten laps in more than 32 seconds as he touched the wall in a time of 5:01.43.
Findlay took the top three spots in the 50 yard butterfly as sophomore Conner Whitaker (24.71), freshman Tucker Stocker (24.87), and senior Clay Fogle (25.83) took the top spots.
In the diving well, freshmen Tyler Adkins and Caio Bottura took first and second on the one meter board. Adkins scored a 165.15 while Bottura finished with a 142.30. Adkins also participated in and won the three meter board with a score of 141.20.
Women's Top Finishers
In the 400 yard medley relay, Findlay's women earned the top spot as freshman Kathryn Samuelson, freshman Hanna Cederholm, senior Meri Cizmar, and sophomore Amanda Stiegal teamed up for a time of 4:08.39. Samuelson also won the 50 yard backstroke for the Oilers, touching in a time of 27.82.
Freshman Brittany Menzer won the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:32.90, 15 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
In the 50 yard freestyle, freshman Lauren Blanchard was a half-second shy of a 'B' standard, finishing in first with a time of 24.59. Fellow freshman Olivia Wile and Kathryn Samuelson took second and third with times of 26.46 and 26.57, respectively.
Sophomore Jenna Dasher won the 100 yard freestyle with a 57.35 and senior Hannah Schreiber also earned a first place finish, swimming a 1:05.52 in the 100 yard backstroke.
Findlay took the top two spots in the 100 yard breaststroke with first place going to freshman Julia Snell (1:07.18) and second place belonging to freshman Hanna Cederholm (1:08.90).
In the final relay of the day, the 400 yard freestyle, freshman Lauren Blanchard, sophomore Amanda Stiegal, freshman Julia Snell, and sophomore Jenna Dasher earned first place with a 3:42.16, 18 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
Diver, sophomore Hannah May won on the three meter board, scoring a 199.20.
This was the final competition before the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) meet, which will take place on February 8-11 in Saginaw, Michigan.
