Final Day of GLIAC Championship Swim Meet
Saginaw, MI - The Univeristy of Findlay men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in their last ever Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) competition on the fourth and final day of the 2017 GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships. The women ended the event with a team score of 396.5 which earned them a fifth place finish. Grand Valley State won the championship with 812 points. On the men's side, the Oilers took seventh with 159.5 points scored. Grand Valley State also won men's championship, scoring 947.5 points.
Women
Earning her best finish of the weekend, senior Meri Cizmar was narrowly out-touched at the finish to finish in second place in the 200 yard backstroke. She swam a 1:59.57, just two one-hundredths of a second behind the leader. Cizmar's time met the "B" standard in the event, earned her team 17 points, and broke her own school record in the event. Junior Emma Barnes swam in and won the 'B' final in the event with a time of 2:02.32, also a "B" standard time. She finished the race in ninth place overall to earn her team eight points.
Sophomore Amanda Stiegal reached the podium in the fast paced 100 yard freestyle. She earned her team 16 points and took third place with a time of 51.40, less than one second out of the top spot. That time set a new school record, besting the time of 51.48 set seven years ago by Lindsay Hatteberg. In the 'B' final of that race, freshman Julia Snell finished in a time of 53.19, good enough for seventh place in that final and 15th overall.
In the 200 yard breaststroke, freshman Hanna Cederholm earned a podium spot as swam a "B" standard time of 2:19.32. That time gave her a third place finish and earned her team 16 points. Julia Snell also swam in the finals of that race and took seventh place with a time of 2:20.78, less than a second shy of the "B" standard. In the 'B' final of that event, junior Alyssa Sauter touched the wall in 2:28.67, earning fourth placed in her section of the final and 12th overall. Junior Rachel Farmer took 14th in the same event with a 2:31.51.
Freshman Brittany Menzer scored four points for Findlay in the 1650 yard freestyle where she swam to a time of 17:56.90 and took 13th place.
Men
In the men's 200 yard breaststroke, senior Todo Djurovic ended his GLIAC swimming career with a time of 2:05.76, giving him a tie for tenth place and earning the team 6.5 points.
Sophomore Alex Matthews took the final point-earning spot in the 1650 yard freestyle for the men as he snuck in under the 17 minute mark with a time of 16:59.34 earning him 16th place.
