Oilers Open Season at Viking Relay Challenge

The University of Findlay men and women's swimming and diving teams opened their season on September 28 at the Viking Relay Challenge in Cleveland, Ohio.

The women were able to finish first in four relays at the event. Hanna Cederholm, Asthon Klopp, and Kendra Polewski teamed up to capture first place in the 3x100 yard butterfly relay with a time of 2:57.93. Cederholm also teamed with Kristina Coleman and Julia Snell to finish first in the 3x100 yard breaststroke relay with a time of 3:23.07. Polewski with Olivia Wile, Christina McFarland, and Amanda Stiegal also came in first place in the 500 yard relay with a time of 4:41.10. The 400 yard freestyle relay was won by Steigal, Polewski, McFarland, and Sarah Miles with a time of 3:42.28.

Dasher, Wile, with Erin Butler were able to finish fourth in the 3x100 yard butterfly relay with a time of 3:07.39. The Oilers were also able to come in fourth in the 500 yard relay with a time of 4:54.00 with a team consisting of Coleman, Dasher, Klopp and Taylor Christensen.

The women also finished in second and third in the 400 yard medley relay with teams consisting of Kathryn Samuelson, Cederholm, Klopp, and McFarland with a time of 4:02.19 and Miles, Coleman, Wile, and Snell with a time of 4:10.28 respectively.

Christensen, Miles, and Sydney Zimdars finished in second for the Oilers in the 3x500 yard freestyle relay with a time of 16:39.59. Right behind them in fourth place was Payton Zess, Taylor Verbsky, and Murphy Vance with a finishing time of 17:40.03.

In the 400 yard IM relay, Cederholm, Snell, Klopp, and Coleman finished in third with a time of 4:14.24.

The men were able to finish in second with a time of 3:08.20 in the 3x100 breaststroke relay with a team consisting of Tyler Endecott, Isaac Stretch, and Nathanial Ladetto. In the 3x100 yard backstroke relay, Trae Gulgin, Paul Pavala, and Jared Toaz finished in third with a time of 2:45.09.

The Oilers were also able to finish in fourth place in five different events. The 3x100 yard butterfly relay was swam by Mark Whitaker, Nathan Bourne and Tucker Stocker with a fourth place time of 2:43.22. Gulgin, Stretch, Whitaker, and Bourne teamed up to take fourth in the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 3:38.98. Alexander Matthews, Pavala, and Toaz took fourth in the 3x500 yard freestyle relay with a time of 15:30.13. The 400 yard IM relay was swam by Toaz, Endecott, Bourne, and Gulgin with a fourth place time of 3:49.52. Endecott, Gulgin, Toaz and Matthews were also a fourth place finishing team in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:19.81.

In the mixed 200 yard medley relay, the men and women had a third and fourth place finish. The third place team was Kathryn Samuelson, Isaac Stretch, Kendra Polewski, and Trent Williams with a time of 1:42.87. Right behind them with a time of 1:44.86 was Trae Gulgin, Julia Snell, Mark Whitaker, and Amanda Stiegal. The mixed 200 yard freestyle relay had a team of Williams, Polewski, Stiegal, and Whitaker for a fourth place finish time of 1:34.99.

The Oiler swimming and diving teams will be competing again at home on Friday, October 5 against Northern Michigan at 3:30 PM.
